I know there's a music thread but it's mostly for posting songs for listening. I thought I'd make this thread to discuss lesser known groups. In particular I was wondering if there are any Boards of Canada and I Fight Dragons fans? I Fight Dragons was promoted by Nintendo on the Nintendo Video service so I'm sure some have heard of them, but they're a local band from Chicago! Their music is basically Chiptune rock mixing NES/SNES etc. sounds with instruments. I kind of ignored them on Nintendo Video since I thought the video was beyond cheesy but they recently (as in a few days ago!) came out with their own Kickstarter funded album and it was amazing! I highly recommend checking them out, it's good stuff. They also wrote and performed the opening to The Goldbergs if anyone watches that. It really brings a tear to my eye to see a couple local guys blow up so much.

Boards of Canada is just something else! Any fans? Their music really is something unique and special, most of it is ambiance really. It's such a dark yet somehow relaxing mix. I love it. It's just kind of indescribable. Oddly enough I discovered them through [Adult Swim] bumpers a while back. (They surprisingly have some great tracks in-between commercial breaks!)

I prefer Tycho's music to Boards of Canada's
Tycho's latest album, Awake, is really good. Check it out.

Yeah, guitars are cool.

My musical project Comet Tail made a couple of recordings.

In terms of ambient techno, Boards of Canada is top notch stuff, though calling it alternative music is strange.

Something I recently checked out in a similar vein is the album Pop by Gas, which is a Wolfgang Voigt project. Definitely recommend anyone listen to that one.

And another ambient project I'm super fond o would be The Disintegration Loops but I feel anyone who would be interested in that has probably already heard them.

This is a signature.
Link goes here now.
Screw you.

I actually didn't see your post until after i made this thread. I thought it was mocking this topic at first lol. Just a coincidence,
As for music videos, this is a real good one for I Fight Dragons.

Pretend and Chcago are also really good tracks.

So my musical project Comet Tail made its first recording, "Rest, Battle, Rest". It's a single demo song, but it's a start.

I dunno if this would really be classed as alternative or not, but the guy/s behind this make tunes using samples from films and tv. Which in itself is not a new idea, but it's been done really well.

I love the idea for this thread. I just kinda wish I was deep enough into music to discuss some lesser known groups...

I really wish we could use this to discuss any kind of music, but many have tried and failed to do those in the past. Which is a shame, since no one's ever going to actually do anything in "A Music Thread" besides spam their favorite 80's country songs and crash people's browsers...

But I digress. The only group I can talk about is Lapfox, which is an electronic music label that consists entirely of one person posting various styles of music under different personas. It's strange, but kinda neat, too. I mostly listen to the "Mayhem" and "Furries in a Blender" labels. Mayhem's style is more...abrasive(?), while FIAB is more light and upbeat.

Some examples:
Mayhem:
I Am The Tower - A more modern one. Lately he's been using a lot of vocals for Mayhem, IIRC.
The Sound - My personal favorite track. It's noisy, but in a sort of eerie way that really suits the theme. I always saw it as a Halloween tune, though I'm not sure if that was the intention.
Space Dog Escape Pod - a remix of a Klippa track (a more dubstep/hip-hoppish label that I...don't listen to much...). Despite that, it feels very much like a decent example of the Mayhem label, since it's kinda noisy and experimental at times.
Rescue - Another vocal Mayhem track, and also a favorite of mine. The lyrics really give me a good vibe.

FIAB:
Carbonate - I forgot to mention...a lot of FIAB tracks can be described as...hyper. And this is a good example of that. Actually, it's my second favorite track so far, since it does have a good mix of slow parts that build up.
Slow Mover - On the flip side, this one's a little more chill, at least for this label.
Great Expectations (FIAB Remix) - A remix, but a good one. It's another slower track, but it still has a fun tune to it. I'm not a fan of the Renard label, which uses a lot of repetitive voice samples. But this version does a good job of mixing things up.
Not Candy - My favorite tune from FIAB (on my favorite album from Lapfox, to boot). This feels like it could be a final dungeon BGM in a video game. It's got a really tense tune to it, like there's a real sense of danger. Love it.

But that's just scratching the surface. There are over a dozen labels over the course of 8+ years, and the dude puts out a ton of music. Admittedly it's more "quantity over quality", but it seems like he's always challenging himself and trying his best to not just do the same thing every time.

And as a bonus: Kitsune2 - The Steel Monster Above the City <- for all those chiptune fans. And yes, there's more stuff like that in Kitsune2's label, I didn't showcase it because I'm not big on chiptunes and remixes...

Pardon the Double post, but @Retro_on_theGo - You might want to consider a title change, since it doesn't seem like you wanted this to be focused on "Alternative music", which is in fact a music genre, but rather a discussion about lesser known bands. There's definitely gonna be a lot of confusion here with that title, as you probably already can see...

Yeah, you're right. I didn't think the title through too much, I'll change it now.

Alrighty, thanks. Just started listening to First Aid Kit, which I guess it's popular since they're a swedish band that got exposure via Youtube, according to Wikipedia. (That's why I linked the channel this time)

I'm really digging it. The music videos are interesting and well-directed, which is always a plus. Music wise, they're Folk with a Country influence - a style I normally don't like at all, but they really pulled it off. The lead singer has a fantastic voice, and I love the lyrics. They also combined the best of Folk with the best of country - soothing melodies and story-like (or perhaps poetic?) lyrics of folk, with the deep and melancholy vocals of Country.

I can't say I've listened to too many songs from then yet - only 4 or 5, but the problem is each song is so good, I keep listening to them repeatedly.
