So all the ads on various web sites are really starting to get me annoyed. Take this one as an example:
Notice the Resident Evil banner? Every time you roll over it with the mouse cursor, it explodes into this
In addition to the darned thing taking up most of the screen, it also begins to play music which is NOT GOOD when you're in a place where you really don't want to be playing music, making noises etc. What makes it worse is that it's not always apparent on how to close the ad. Notice how the "close" button at the top right of the expanded ad sorta blends in with the rest of the forum stuff? Each ad is different of course. Right after it's closed, naturally, one would move the cursor down to click on a link in the forum, but POW then the ad explodes again, with accompanying music, because I just accidentally rolled over the banner.
On some crazy ad-abundant web sites, it's almost like there's a maze where you have to move your cursor just right so that you don't accidentally roll over the myriad of banners...
ARRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHH. Anyone have any crazy web-advertisement related horror stories?
From what I have gathered in the UK the ads on Nintendo Life rarely are a problem, 99% are gaming related, they don't make sounds and are not too intrusive. I gather it is a different story in the US where they get all sorts of crazy ads for fat removal, stinky feet etc.
My suggestion, move to the UK, you know it makes sense.
I get almost constant "1 Rule for Flat Stomach Obey" advertisements, only now they are in Spanish. I also once got frequent "Gay (insert whatever here) Dating" advertisements, though I rarely see them now.
Unfortunately, I am on multiple computers throughout the day, most of which are assigned to other people so I'm not able to disable everything I would like.
HOWEVER, if anyone IS interested in disabling some of this nonsense, then here is how you can do it in Internet Explorer Tools > Internet Options > Advanced should give you a screen that looks similar to this:
Then scroll down to the section titled: Multimedia (pictured below) and uncheck the items that you do not want to load. As you can see, I've unchecked the animation option.
edit: well that didn't ditch the animated ads. off to disable flash too...
Screen-centering adverts are a pain. I don't see the point of them either. Most of the time they make me less likely to want to go out and buy whatever they've planted in my face. I think half the time it's just some loner guy in the advertising department going "HEY GUIZ CHECK THIS OUT" when he discovered the more advanced Adobe Flash options. But for me the main annoyance is that sometimes the drop-down menus at the top of the site sometimes appear underneath the advert, so you can't select any of the top two or three without refreshing the page a few times before an advert that doesn't render itself on top of everything appears.

@Magi: Just install Firefox and ABP on all those computers, then you won't have to mess with anyone's stinky IE settings. If you don't want them to know you've been installing stuff, just remove any icons/shortcuts/program entries and open it with the run command. There is no excuse for putting up with ad's anymore, except on NL of course, cos we love 'em, and want them to get the pennies.
And ergh... can we have the Evony ads in blighty please.
@Magi, Sorry to hear your having problems with the adverts in the US, we're going to try and keep a closer eye on them (its difficult being here in the UK). We'll always try our best to make the ads relevant and as less annoying as possible.
