Never. It's not as fun when I get them on purpose.
Some need you to try for them on purpose. Jump kick 30 times without touching the floor I achieved today on Castlevania HD. Who would do that under normal circumstances if it didn't tell you to do it?
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
Nope. Massive waste of time and really not a true reflection of skill anyway since 99% of the people with decent collections sit there reading a FAQ and copying everything they read, then like to masquerade as though they're some type of gaming deity. I like the idea in theory, and I enjoy seeing them pop up when I randomly earn them, but it's just turned into another way for the self-proclaimed gaming elite to waste even more time achieving tasks they aren't having fun performing towards the end of impressing people they don't know or won't ever meet in real life.
Fun.
Yeah, I whole-heartedly agree. Most achievements are just tedious and repetitive anyways, and there's no way to get secret achievements without an FAQ anyways. They're only good for bragging rights, yet they're really nothing to brag about. It's just pointless.

Why the hell would you want to do that on purpose?
I sometimes go for ALL the achievments in a game. I get annoyed with games that require more than 2 playthrus but if I really like a game Im all for getting everything. I like the challenge. For the last year or so Ive had so many games to play thru I havent went for many Platinum Trophies because I still have games from last year in the wrapper unplayed. Im just getting through them one at the time
..... Having over 1500 trophies and 71 Gold Trophies does indeed make me happy

For an easy 20 Points. Plus, repeated bouncing is a safe way to attack the first boss while remaining safe (despite it doing very little damage each time). But I wouldn't do it unless it asked me to do it, I have no reason to do it again.

(like when there's cheevos for collecting items or something)
Sorry to double-post, but I quite literally almost threw up when I read this. They've achievements. Cheevos is awful. Please...don't ever use that term again. Shortening words alone does not a catchy term make.
I will abbreviate anyway i see fit, thank you very much. =P Cheevos.
And really, 99% of people who get achievements do it via FAQs and guides? 99%? I must have missed that Gallup poll.
I enjoy unlocking achievements, they add to the replay value of games that have already been beaten (unlocked all extras, beat on all difficulty levels, etc...) or they seem like "mini side-quests" or challenges that you can do for bragging rights or whatever. The only achievements I don't go after are most of the online multiplayer or almost impossible ones that require an absurd amount of hours of gameplay that make a game a chore, for example; Gears of War "Seriously..." achievement that requires you to get 10,000 kills in online multiplayer... no thanks. All in all I find achievements to be good idea that we'll see for a while in gaming.
Edit: 99%? hmmm well I guess that I should feel honoured to be in the 1%. Most achievements tell you what to do or give you hints which aren't hard to figure out and the secret achievements are easy to stumble on. I never had to look up FAQ or whatever, it spoils the feeling of actually achieving the achievement which is part of the fun of it.
@BrazCanaMan Thats exactly like me, i enjoy getting absolute everything thats not insane and if it is i get it in slow chunks, like Metroid Prime I go scan something, save, Scan, save, and so on, well not just scan one but get to a mini boss or hard part save before and than again after.

I like to 100% games that I think are really good, as long as there's a reasonable number of tasks. I generally get all the stars on 3D mario games and such. If I don't care about the game as much, I'll just have fun, beat the main quest getting what I can along the way and move on. I'll never get all the trophies in SSBB, for example.
I've never really played a game with true achievements seriously, because I don't have a PS360. I'd hope my obsessive compulsive side wouldn't get the better of me though. Many games seem to have silly achievements that don't really have any impact on the game's quest itself. I think that's sort of a waste of time, even though some of them can be pretty funny. Personally, I'd rather not have them calling to me to complete pointless tasks. It'll mean that many fewer games I 100%, and I do love that little gold icon on backloggery.
100% games are one thing... they reqire exploration and gives you some itens or different endings
Awards is ; jump 30 times etc, repetitive useless mindless things that one would never do in order to fully enjoy a game
Jump 30 times? I would expect that you'd get that achievement after you jump 30 gaps normally playing the game. Thankfully I've never seen such a mundane achievement. If you look at most games achievement lists, most of them are pretty easy or fun to get. Take Fable II for instance, pretty much all of the achievements are fun to get; "chicken kicker" requires you to kick a chicken, which I do every time one gets in my way so it wasn't hard and it was funny to kick a chicken and see the achievement pop up... made me LOL. "The illustrated hero" requires you to tattoo you body, which I did as soon as I found out you can get tattooed in the game so my hero looks more like me (tattoos ftw). And there is a huge list of easy or fun to get achievements that you get, pretty much by playing the game normally, from defeating your first great opponent to getting 15 villagers drunk.
The only game I have that I've unlocked almost all achievements (missing 1) is Oblivion, and I got them from just playing the game and not having to do "repetitive useless mindless things that one would never do in order to fully enjoy a game".

How do you figure? 9 out of 10 times trying to get 100% in a game is the very definition in repetitiveness. Doing that means going through areas 3 or 4 times trying to find the last items you missed or pouring over a FAQ sheet you printed out. Not exactly a good time.
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
They don't help to make a bad game enjoyable, but they can help to broaden your enjoyment of a good one. I've played loads of games with achievements, and usually don't bother with them. But a few (like Mega Man 9/10 and Pacman CE) give you a higher bar to shoot for than you normally might.
They can be fun. While I don't go bananas over them myself, I certainly don't begrudge anybody else their enjoyment of them.
I think the best part of having Trophies/Achievments is the replay value. Mostly gives you the push for a second playthru for me and that is just getting more for your money. If you had to pay for the achievments then that would suck.
