I still don't understand this whole "I know what I'm getting for Christmas" thing. I thought the whole point was to get surprised.

Even as a kid, I was lucky to get anything on my list....I gave up on lists pretty early on as a result.

Funny story.

I'm going to have to fall on the pro peeker side though. Why?

1) Sneaking around like a spy is fun.
2) You're still surprised, just a little earlier than you were going to be originally. Plus, along with said surprise comes a sense of accomplishment from using your super awesome spy skills to find the presents. You just can't get that feeling Christmas morning...you have to EARN it.
3) If you got good stuff, you're even MORE excited. When I would know I was getting something good, It was even harder to wait for X-mas day to finally play with whatever I got.

Sure, you have to feign surprise, but that's just a sacrifice all super-secret-spies need to make. If you're getting something awesome, the excitement you get just from finally being able to open it should get you started on that. If your gift sucks, well, then you at least have some time to emotionally prepare for the fact you're getting something you don't want. This way, instead of a quick flash of disappointment hastily covered up, your appreciation will seem more genuine. You'll be happy knowing you didn't make someone who spent time and money on your gift sad with one betrayed glance. Everyone wins.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

That's it. I'm getting a safe if I ever decide to have kids. All the presents are going in there with a long random passcode memorized only by myself. Try sneaking in there!

Personally I don't like surprises, I don't like the returns line, and don't like knowing my parents got the wrong gifts because they got confused and now wasted money. Which is why my family no longer employs the "surprise" tradition, and instead the gifts are always hand-picked.

I was tricked once, I wanted Wii Music and I shook the only present I had under the tree. It was this big box, long... and I shook it and felt like loose stuff. I said... **** it's cologne... and I walked off. When Christmas came I got two other presents from my aunt so I opened those first. Got a Dragon shirt and a Magic Kit... I said cool. Better then the cologne. Then my mom told me to open hers, I was like I don't really feel like it but I didn't tell her that. I opened it... and there was a bunch of medicine! I said WTF! Then I saw something shine and hit my eye... it was the plastic wrapping of... WII MUSIC. Went back to my room and spent around 4 hours making a song.

Btw I have never gotten more then 4 presents ever. I am surprised when I hear what people got last year here... there's like...a list of 13 items!? Guess I was poorer then I thought.

Hear hear. The whole fun of Christmas comes from being surprised and being able to scream like a little kid legitamitely. :3

If you peek, you've got "omg omg omg, can I act really surprised???" on your mind all the way up to when you're tearing away the wrapping paper.

My birthday is on the 28th, and as a teen that hates just about everything mainstream (except for Nintendo games, duh), my mom asks me what I want on my list the most, and it's more of a surprise of what she gets me that isn't on my list and when I get that stuff. I have never really present peeked, mostly because 1. I don't care that terribly about what I get, and 2. My school goes on winter break as close to Christmas as possible, as evidenced by the 2 finals I took today.

@Zach - Wait a second, are you saying Santa doesn't exist? (cries in a corner)

irl spoiler?

No, I've known the fat man doesn't exist as we all believed when we were kids for years. Adding in that statement was kind of an afterthought; I would've made that my entire post if I was truly serious. Or was I?

Exactly.

Only Good little Boys and Girls can see Santa.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

I'm ranked 15th in my class out of around 590, and climbing fast. Does that not count for nothing?

Not only am I trying to convince my two kids of this (no peeking = more Christmas excitement), but I'm also trying to keep my son from ruining the whole "Santa" thing for my daughter. Of course, it doesn't help that my daughter remembers that the wrapping paper that Santa used this year was the same wrapping paper that we used for her gifts about 3 or 4 years ago. Darned kids and their memory! She can't remember to pick her shoes up off the floor despite being told 9,453,222,782 times but she can remember what kind of wrapping paper she had on a few presents three years ago!

@Magi: so what if Santa uses the same wrapping paper? It just proves the presents came from the same jolly ol' fat man :3

Silly duck. Do what I do and shrug your shoulders when people ask you what you want. I got lots of surprises this year, as ever.
