Topic: A gentle and very lovely reminder about spam

Posts 1 to 20 of 32

What to do if you find a spam topic (or post).

This post is still in effect. I'm aware we're seeing quite a bit of spam around here lately, so the official line is to report the post or topic and move on — please don't respond to it, as that only makes our job take longer as we then have to delete your posts too, and nobody wants that.

Someone make spam. You find spam. You report spam. Everyone be happy.

I generally report spam and, if I'm replying to the thread in question (ie, when a spam post shows up in a non-spam topic), warn users not to click anything in it in my reply. Should I not do that? It means mods end up having to edit my post too when the offending comment is removed, but some readers might not recognize it as spam and end up with a malware infection.

@Raylax: Please don't even do that — give your fellow users some credit, lol. Most of the time the spam is incredibly obvious anyway, and all your warnings do is make more work for us during the cleanup process, especially during the rare case when one of us is unavailable to knock it out as soon as it's reported and other users follow the example laid by others and also start discussing it. Just report it and move on.

Lol, I know that the vast majority of members would recognize it, but I've still seen a few replies by users who think the spam post is legitimate, but simply out of place. If the spam targeting were to something semi-relevant to NL ("free" games, pyramid scheme console offers, etc), then curious paws could end up clicking dodgy things. But I guess that's not my responsibility. Instruction duly noted, I'll report and ignore from now on.

What about duplicate posts? I mean I know its hard to know if there is a post about the same topic that you just posted without a search button (I know its in the works) but should we just report it and thats it or should we politely point out the original thread as long as its not been six months since last posting?

I imagine it doesn't matter for those, provided once someone's pointed them in the right direction, everyone else doesn't jump on the bandwagon and keep the thread high up. Tends to be at the mod's discretion as to whether a pre-existing thread is young/still relevant enough to lock the dupe. And then it's only like those threads get locked, not deleted.

I suspect you already know the answer to this question as we've communicated about it in emails on previous occasions. Provide a link to the original thread but be nice about it, that's all we ask.

@Raylax
Some new NL user who repost the same thread, out of anger, or trying to make a useless point about something, are the most troubling.
It is best to leave them alone, or have a Mod take care of them, because, lately, we have been getting a few of them.

Yeah. I think Tasuki was referring to topics being created when one already exists a couple of pages back, and/or already has a significant number of posts (like, if someone made a music thread right now, unaware of the large existing music thread currently sat on page 3). Not anger / mod retaliation / useless topics.
Kind of the difference between not searching the forums (justifiable seeing as there's no forum search feature, not counting an advanced Google search), and intentionally flaunting the rules.

I'm just saying that this is the most cleanest fourm I've ever seen. (<---- Big Compliment There) I've been on other forums and there much ditter then this and even Kids Forums by Big Corperations are more innappropriat and spam-friendly. You guys by far do a fantastic job at making these forum's safe.

Looks like this needs to be bumped sadly.

Oh, too late, because I replied to it. Yep, spam is wild right now. Same on Game Informer. On second thought, when I said you could go to them for advice, I just noticed it may not be a very bright idea to ask a competitor for advice. Yeah, just redo the banning system to have a method for spammers.

Anyways, I'm pretty good at finding spam on GI, so I'll help when I can here too.

Didn't think you would have to delete our posts too...kinda figured you would delete the original topic to delete it all at once.

Delete all of the posts? Surely deleting the main post would delete all of the replies along with it? That's sounds like a stupid and slow process...
