Just a bit of a poll, but I was wondering what the feelings where around here regarding 4k television. Have you already bought a set? If not, do you plan on buying one relatively soon or do you think the lack of content means you'll be sitting it out for a few years?
I have a Sony W950b set, which is non 4k, but more of a premium 1080p geared towards gaming (very low lag and good motion blur reduction).
I'm not really excited about 4k personally, given the lack of content, higher cost, and the fact that it dosent apply to console gaming for the remainder of this gen. However late 2015 may be the tipping point, when Netflix is scheduled to begin 4k streaming.
My plan is to keep the 1080p set for probably about 3 more years, and hopefully at thay point, 50-55 inch OLED sets will be affordable.
Little. My eyes don't see in 4K, so a game, show or movie outputting in 4K means nothing to me. The only difference I see is a few more zeroes in the price tag, and that's not a pleasant sight, so that one "con" against zero "pros."

Like most technology I won't really consider it until it becomes more accesible. In 3-4 years they'll be even better at the tech and far cheaper with the prices. Plus, more people will actually be developing for it. Well, and I keep my TV at a far enough distance it's really hard to tell the difference. I haven't even been convinced to leave Plasma yet for anything else because of no motion blue and pure black pretty much being made for gaming.
I don't want to have to download/stream so much extra content. HD is just fine, the bandwith required to stream such high resolution images with such a little pay off is not wise given the whole fact we have finite resources. Bandwith isn't free and it requires electricity, leading to a multitude of issues in such trivial advancement. As technology becomes more efficient, then sure, but as of now the desire to improve something so trivial regardless of cost seems like a poor idea. Besides all this people need to understand the eye itself has a limited resolution, the benefit of 4k isn't likely to be had while watching a reasonable sized TV screen from a reasonable distance away.
It's not said or appreciated enough as to just how much more intelligently Nintendo develops their systems, they create efficient and reliable consoles because they apply new technology in a prudent and pragmatic manner, i wish more in the electronics industry would follow this model as opposed to just trying to one up everything all the time. Wide spread technological innovation shouldn't come at the cost of reliability and efficiency as it currently does, these kind of advancements need to be phased in more responsibly.
Well, at the moment, it's not like I'm planning on getting a 4k TV, but I have seen 4k and I can safely say it looks incredible. Right now though, I'm content with what my family has for TV, and I really don't think we'll consider getting one for quite a few years until it's cheaper has more things that support 4k.
I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. In fact, I thought the Gamepad was 720p until someone told me otherwise. I don't think 4k will make a difference.
I think it's a waste of money and a whole lot of nothing special
I agree. Plus, the more processes the TV is running, the more lag there is when playing video games. I'm saying this because most, if not all 4K TV's run in 120 FPS or higher with many other processes in the background that make controller inputs lag.

That doesn't quite make sense to me. Why would the controller input lag if the game console is receiving the controller's input? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the TV doesn't have anything to do with the game controller's input; all it does is display images that the console tells it to.
It depends. I don't have the money for one, like the other 98% of the world, because I'm broke. The sets aren't even that great, yet, and software updates are going to be required to get anything over 30FPS on 1.4a HDMI. The response times are also pretty poor from what I've seen, so even if I did have money, I would wait for better stuff, unless I was seriously rich, like who they were aimed at originally.
The better 4K sets do upscale from 1080p, though, which is actually pretty beneficial, even if it isn't native 4K.
I'm very much against HD television already, so 4k is even more worthless and glorified to me.
HD, and by extension, 4k, would be vaguely interesting if they were worth anything outside of gaming (and that's not much already).
Almost all movies only receive a cosmetic improvement, and it's still nothing to miss. There's no movie in existence where HD actually improves the movie itself, so it's mostly nothing more than a commercial keyword to make the uninformed consumers squeal in excitement over stuff they don't actually understand.
For my taste, HD can go rot somewhere. It's a standard everybody has, but nobody uses, full of exaggerated misinformation. If companies were at least honest about it, I wouldn't mind, but they present it like the second coming, and the level of obsession some people show about it is really disgusting at times.
Call me old fashion, but I don't believe in getting a new television until the old one quits. Then again, I'll never completely understand the fuss about 1080p and 720p and all that. My TV works, so that's good enough for me.

HD really is better, though. I can get 720p and 1080i picture with Dolby Pro Logic IIx from over the air antenna, and that beats the heck out an SDTV with plain 'ol built in stereo speakers. It's actually more work to NOT do HD anymore, because you would have to literally go back and search for older gadgets.
