Topic: 1001 games you must play before you die

Let's debate each and every one starting with q and end with 2!!!

In a year, it'll be the 1001 games in my backlog.

1001 is a big stretch for a 30 year old industry. 101 seems far more reasonable, and we can do away with all the filler, like Rock Band 1, most of the GTA games, Mega Man 8 (wtf?), etc. Some are just weird, DKC 3 instead on the original? Geez...

Besides, unlike films, albums, and paintings, no-one has the time to play through 1001 video games. If they choose to do 101 or even 202 (or 201, what's people's fascination with one over?), it would be a much tighter, concise, believable, and reasonable list.

I saw this book at Borders, and it made me mad. You put Uno, Viva Pinata, Clubhouse Games and even clone sequels, and you refuse to put KIRBY?!?!?! That just turned me off from this book.

Super Paper Mario isn't on their?

It sucks compared to the other two but it is way better than SWAT 4!

On topic, I've played 355 of those games you listed.

I'd go through the list and highlight the ones I've played if I wasn't on this annoying MacBook.

There's a good reason for that. It's because all games become obsolete and are replaced sooner or later by the latest and greatest new installments. Basically I'd say you can't have a list of must play games that isn't made up of current games.

But I agree that this list is way too big. A list of anything that amounts to 1000 could easily be more concise. In fact I think anyone could make a so called "essential" list with as little as 30 games.

Space Invaders, Defender, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, Tetris, Mega Man 2, Double Dragon, Legend of Zelda: A link to the Past, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter 2, Doom 2, Mortal Kombat, Silent Scope, Virtua Fighter 2, Diablo 2, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy VII, Tenchu, Star Craft, Max Payne, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, Halo, DDR, Kill Switch, Burnout 3, King's Quest, Wii Sports... oops. These are outdated now.

Space Invaders Extreme, Gradius Rebirth, Pac-Man Party, DKCR, New Super Mario Bros Wii, ThruSpace, Mega Man 10, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Mario Kart Wii, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Bioshock, Mad World, Silent Scope, Soul Calibur IV, Diablo 3, Tomb Raider Underworld, Dead Rising, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Star Craft 2, Alan Wake, Dragon Age 2, Halo Reach, Just Dance 2, Gears of War 2, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, Dreamfall, Wii Sports Resort... see how easy that was.

This book is just writing down every game it needs to amount to 1001--or do they really believe you haven't lived until you've played not only Wii Sports Resort but the identical original game as well??

I own 765 of those. Guess I'd better start buying retro stuff again soon.

I knew when I saw APB right at the start that it would be an unsatisfactory list. I'd rather put Hellgate London up there than APB - at least Hellgate lasted longer. It seems I really can't agree with a fair amount of this list. Much of it seems to be just recent blockbuster name drops... but then again, if it's due to reader suggestions then this isn't surprising.

Still, a lot of the important ones are on there. Credit given. Now... on to the nitpicking! (Because if you make a list like this, you're asking for it! )

Um, also why is Deus Ex mentioned twice? (Deus Ex, Deus Ex Machina) And as I've said a few times before, Morrowind and Oblivion are stunted compared to the older Elder Scrolls games and don't even deserve a mention if Daggerfall or Arena aren't there.

I agree with some of the other posters that 1001 is too many. It would be better to cut out the fat and choose the real defining ones. A popularity vote is perhaps not the best way to do that, but then again everyone's opinions differ so no one would be able to agree on a small number of titles.

You gotta play every first-person shooter. It is (in my opinion), the best category of games.

Technically speaking, this is a list more of "1001 games you should experience," not "The 1001 best games ever made," so while some may not seem like they fit, it may be more due to interesting play mechanics within the game than the overall quality of that game. That's my best guess, anyway. I'll post some games I think should be put on that list if it were remade today later.

And also the most irritating... and playing online: it has the most annoying bunch of players in ANY game category... the only good, and by far greatest FPS is the original GoldenEye, and the revamped GoldenEye Wii too.

Eh, lists like this are generally designed solely to spark debate about what should and shouldn't be on there. The omission of some obvious choices and inclusion of some baffling ones is most likely intentional.
If it was all 'correct,' people would just look at it and go 'I agree' and move on

Regarding the list, I've played too many of them to count. While it is missing some classics, I'd say overall it's a pretty solid selection.

I don't understand why DKC 3 is in there, but yet the game that started it all, the original DKC, isn't in there. And, in my opinion, DKC is by far better than 3 in so many ways, but I'd still pick DKC 2 over each of them.

Nintendogs baffles me too, who would WANT to play that game?
