I've always been more than happy to disable adblock for the site, but I don't think I'd pay for a subscription to a premium mode.
I do love NintendoLife, but it's one of a handful of gaming sites I visit on a daily basis. Meaning: it's a service that I get to access for free elsewhere to get the same level of quality.
I think if the only way to get Nintendo news/reviews were fee based then I would pay (like in the old days where it all came from magazines), but since you're competing against many other free sources of news you need to make the benefits of paying for the site being something beyond the others' basic content with the equivalent content still being available with ads to avoid losing all your traffic.
There's a similar situation in wrestling news sites and the site pwinsider has such a setup: basic news/results/reviews for free in the ad funded version of the site, in the paid section it has opinion pieces; exclusive interviews; podcasts; rumours; stuff that more diehard wrestling fans (who are the ones likely to pay) would like, you can see what the paid content is on the free site but can't access it. They've been going over a decade, so it must be a working business model, I'd check their setup out for inspiration.
If it was a subscription then I would expect a lot from it. A donation thing would be fine.
I guess the almost 500 articles we publish per month doesn't count? That would probably work out less than $0.01 per article..
Are those articles going to be exclusive or atleast time exclusive to subscribers? If there isn't enough of a incentive to subscribe, then plenty of people won't. Rooster Teeth does something like $5 a year (been a long time since I checked, it might have chagned) to get their videos in High Quality and a few days early. They have higher volume which lets them get away with charging so little, but subscriber only content is what will sell subscriptions.
Honestly the easiest think to do would be a weekly Podcast that releases every Friday (end of the day UK time) that recaps the week's news and NL writes could give opinions about the news. Make that exclusive to subscribers and I bet you could attract some willing to pay. Especially if a subsciber only forum was opened to talk about the podcast. But that was just the first idea that came to mind. Would take maybe two hours of work each week for that Podcast too.
If it was subscription rather than a donation, then there would have to be some solid perks because, quite frankly, the information I get from this site can usually be found elsewhere.
I'm happy with the site as it is. I don't use adblock (as far as I know) cos ads don't bother me - I've got a rather advanced brain that allows me to control what I look at and click on
So long as the site looks reasonably attractive (as it does now, loving the Splatoon artwork everywhere) and maintains the quality of games journalism, I'll keep coming.
But remember this, Nintendolife: since I started dropping by here I've become semi addicted and I check the main page and forums several times a day. At a cost to my productivity at work and at home. Start making me decide whether or not to pay to come here and I'll drop you like a stone cos my life could really do with more time spent doing other things (including playing the masses of games I have acquired in the last 12 months).
You guys had me at blood and semen.

Heck no. This same information can be found else where ..not to discredit this site. But lately there has been an up tick in click bait articles. If. People are that starved for info there's always loads of diff Nintendo podcasts. In reality though these same podcast generally get their news from the same source Google or the like. The difference is people forming their own opinions. That is what makes the info compelling. It's never the source
Just get Damien to write more of those advertisements masquerading as 'articles' where he promotes someone who is selling an item and instead of the kickbacks going to him, the proceeds go to running the site!

Actually, your brain makes you look at the ads too, even if it's not a conscious experience for you.
I think either a donate button or maybe something like a Paeteron (sorry if I spelled that wrong but I am at work on a break) would work. Something where if people donate X amount they get little goodies like a NL t shirt or a 5 dollar eshop card/credit depending how much they donate. Something that they get but doesn't pertain to site funcationability were non payers get screwed out of.

Sorry, but despite checking this site daily I wouldn't pay for support it ^_^;
Ask me anything for help, but not money, I really can't help on that side XD But I do keep NintendoLife as the only exception to AdBlock, hope that helps.
By the way, I think others mentioned it before and I know you don't have full control over it, but sometimes some very bad ads sneak on these pages and it become really tempting to turn on AdsBlock, not sure there is any way for avoid that, but it could become a problem if it happens too often ^_^;
Fun fact anyway, I actually discovered AdBlock and started to use it thanks to the big banner on NintendoLife saying "Support us, don't use AdBlock" XD;;;
I don't run adblock on NintendoLife to begin with but would consider dropping £2-3 a month to completely disable ads as I enjoy the content that is put out.
I don't use adblock on this site, but I frequently have to disable Adobe Flash Player when video ads come up, since they tend to make my computer (a low-mid range 2013 laptop) freeze. That's honestly more intrusive than something I just have to click out of or past. If y'all could find some ads that don't gobble up processing power and RAM (I've seen it soar into 10% usage of my CPU and 400+ MB of RAM). I'd be able to support the site much better. I, personally wouldn't mind having to see an ad to access an exclusive interview or more meaty article, but not to view every article.

I'm sorry, you seem to have missed the part where I said I have a rather advanced brain... that allows me to control what I look at... please understand.
