Topic: What's with the "hearts" in the comments section?

I know people are always asking for a "Like" button. And it's very PC these days not to have a "dislike" button. But I'm just wondering if there is any point to them, now or in the future? Is there a sort feature? Do more "votes" move the comment to the top? Is there an aggregate score for all our likes (which I'm sure would never be abused by groups on this site

I think it's good to have, just wondering if there's anything planned for it?

Is it possible to at least make the heart turn red when somebody gives it a plus 1 so people can see that maybe it's a post that's worth reading? I hardly ever see anything but zeros now, the occasional 1 does pop up, not sure I've ever seen anything higher than a 1 though. Personally I don't +1 anybody I know, just reply to them, I only use it on very rare occasions w/ people I don't know.

If something makes me laugh, or is a well-made point I agree with, chances are they might get a 'heart' from me. I imagine it's just there as an anonymous expression of appreciation for a particular post.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

@gcunit: "anonymous expression of appreciation"

While I really like the poetry of that phrase, I just don't think somebody would go through the trouble of coding that heart into the website just for a little fun anonymity. Though I am jaded, so my mind tends not to think of fluff, but I suppose in this instance it could just be fluff.

@Tsurii: You made me google e-peen. Pretty funny, in a sad-but-true kind of way.
Now we need hearts in the forums so I can heart your comment. Pandora's box has been opened.

I honestly think they just added it to shut people up asking for a like button. This day and age people seem think cause X site has something every site needs it too even if there is no rhyme or reason behind it.

@Tasuki: You can never shut people up though, just change the question.

Old question - Why DON'T we have a like button?
New question - Why DO we have a like button?

You are probably right, it's a dead end going nowhere, and really, where can it go?, but I feel like it should do something, even if I'm not sure what. Hearts do need to turn red when it gets a like though, that's just common sense.
