Topic: This site needs a censor.

I'm tired of idiots swearing all the time, the people get reported and the mods edit the posts anyways. With a censor no one would have to see the garbage, and the mods wouldn't have to waste their time fixing it.

That's really a good idea, and from my experience with web development it would be relatively easy to implement.

An automatic warning/reporting feature when they do submit foul language would be a good idea too. The only problem with word censors is that people often get around them by simply misspelling the words in question. Of course if that gets to be a problem you can always manually report them.

I think most people who swear do so in their everyday idiom, not in an express attempt to offend all involved. Intentionally misspelling would only be a problem for those occasional few are trying to upset someone, and those would be the cases actually worth reporting anyway, so I think a censor would do well.

PHP's str_replace() would take all day, requiring you specify every possible combination or spelling; preg_replace() is your friend for serious pattern matching. But to be honest, it wouldn't make much sense to build their own set of patterns here even if they decided to start filtering, because there are plenty of existing modules / classes that would be better to start with. No need to reinvent the wash-out-your-mouth-with-soap wheel.

However, it's probably not worth it overall. I haven't noticed all that much profanity here, other than that weird suggestive symbol ending all of theblackdragon's posts.

Sounds reasonable. I'm generally not a fan of censoring ideas, but forcing people to clean up their language when expressing said ideas isn't a bad choice.

Hell, I'm surprised this forum doesn't already have a censor, especially since there's people as low as 10 years old reading and posting here. I mean, even the [adult swim] forum has a censor, and the lowest age allowed on there is 13...
