I've been thinking about buying a new Nintendo console, but I'm unsure if I should buy the Switch or the Wii U? The Switch looks great, yet keep in mind I have not owned anything Nintendo related for a very long time.

I'm very uncertain which to buy as the Switch: Won't have much at the start and having certain titles I wish to play might not be available. While taking that into account there are a ton of titles I'm unsure if they'll be on the Switch in which I really want like for example Smash Bros, LOZ Twilight Princess etc. Would someone have any suggestions or advice? I've looked online and have found a ton very conflicting disputes between the new and the old. It'd be greatly appreciated for a very honest input so I can decide which is worth it. Thank you.

A console is a long term investment. For me it makes sense to pay a little extra to have the new console that will be supported for a long time. You mention Twilight Princess, but that will likely be a part of the GC backwards compatibility at some point.

Everyone will have a different outlook (some people are cool with buying old consoles because they have larger libraries). But realistically the Wii U has one of the weakest libraries of any Nintendo console and the Switch is looking to get a ton of support even in its first year.

I'd go with the long term investment here and focus on the Switch, unless there's a ton of Wii U games you are absolutely dying to play and don't care to have a Switch for a couple years anyway.

@AlexSays
Thank you very much for your reply!
It is very much appreciated. As far as games go there are about less then 10 I'd really want to play. I'd definitely want to play every LOZ, SSB and every and all Mario related games. You do make a very good point as far as a long term investment goes, I'm very uncertain to anything new in relations to the newer Nintendo consoles and was unaware that there was/is backwards compatibility. Like I previously said I haven't owned anything "Nintendo" for a very long time. The only two things I own still are my Nintendo 64 and a Nintendo DS XL which are very outdated, but still fun nonetheless. It's just been mind boggling whether or not I go with the new console and perhaps in that case it might mean sacrificing a few very great titles I'd love to play. I wouldn't say I'm dying to play them, but I would love to. Again thank you for your reply and it's very helpful, obviously I'll have to make a decision at some point just thought some advice or suggestions would be great ^^

@Eros Buy a Wii U, used if you're price sensitive. With it you can play any Wii and Wii U titles, plus with a bit of research you can get it running Gamecube games (that you own a copy of) and emulating all the older Nintendo home consoles too, though you'll still need to own legit copies of the games to be legal.

There's more than enough fantastic Wii U and Wii games to keep you busy for years, which can buy you some time to see how the more expensive Switch settles in.

Then, if you choose, you can sell on your Wii U (I suspect if you have one in good condition it will always retain a decent value) and move on to the Switch, though I think you'll love the Wii U and want to keep it, regardless of the Switch.

Any Wii U games that get ported to Switch well probably be available much cheaper in their Wii U version for some time.

Wrong. A console is a short term investment. Look at the Wii U.

@Aviator Why? What happened to yours? I thought that spontaneous combustion thing was just a myth!

Luckily mine hasn't succumbed to anything like that and still plays lots of brilliant games on it just fine.

Yeah like I said.. if you think the Wii U has 'lots of brilliant games' go for it. If you're like everyone else and wasn't amazed by the Wii U's library, I'd stick with the new console. For less than 10 games (some of which might become playable on the Switch anyways, others will have newer better versions like Smash Bros.) I wouldn't bother.
