Topic: Mods lock too many threads?

Just a question that maybe people would want to discuss. I've noticed the mods on this forum are quite eager with their tendency to lock threads. I understand the desire for a well-oiled machine but I think you do also need to take a step back and consider what a forum is actually for. It's for people to talk to each other. That's pretty much it!
If this is something that the site owner (whoever that may be) doesn't consider up for discussion, by all means just tell me to shhhhhh. But I thought I'd raise it on the off chance that the mods could at least discuss it. I mean, theblackdragon seemed to lock the "Vita vs 3DS" thread for no reason other than he didn't think it was going anywhere useful. Hate to be the one to point it out, but pretty much every thread could be interpreted that way.

You're relatively new to Nintendo Life.

These apples vs. oranges discussion have been going on for ages, and while people may have the best intentions, they always end up leading to some form of argument. Also, and I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm so bloody sick of people fighting over a company "winning". Again, it just ends up to pointless arguing that benefits no one.

If you look at the first few posts in that topic, nobody was taking it seriously, because we know where it'll end up. Discuss something else, because the community has already discussed this.

btw, tbd is the glorious exception to the rule that there are no girls on the internet

EDIT: Also, the mod team do a fantastic job, and the fact you're complaining over something that is completely justified proves this.

Who is the "company" in that context? And once again, it's the internet. 90% of things said are pointless that benefit no-one.

Well that's the kind of attitude that seems unhealthy to me, you're just viewing things from your particular perspective. It seemed to me that people were taking it no less seriously than any other thread on here. That surely is why forums have rules, so it doesn't turn into just someone projecting their own preferences onto an environment? (not suggesting you were trying to do that blackdragon, just using it as a one-off example).

Aha, my apologies. I'm afraid my peer group tends to fit the 90s stereotypes quite well so I still stupidly assume that most gamers are male. (based on my recent ebay adventures, nearly all of the shooter/action crowd still are)

Nintendo. It's always Nintendo here.

I say it's more for protection then gag order since some of the topic can start out normal with no bad intentions, then all of a sudden someone takes something out of context, overanalyze, over passionate, or just troll. Next thing you know a topic about which system is better or who's in what game turns into a 6 page argument about moral values.

When you read some of these post and comments, you'll notice the patterns too.

A dying animal struggles, thrashes and howls in protest as its life torn from it. To see this in action, watch Animal Planet. The same thing happens when a video game is or isn't released. To see this in action, stay here.

I anticipate this thread ending in an ironic twist

Oh don't worry. I once went on the "something awful" forums. I certainly agree that too much authority is better than too little!

The mods here are fair and lenient, imo. Miiverse and GameFAQs have brutal mods. You can't so much as fart in those forums w/o your comment being deleted.

CaviarMeths

There was no reason at all to lock the 3DS vs Vita thread, I agree. There actually was interesting discussion in the thread, but then TBD locked it a full day after the last post, saying "you guys couldn't just let it die." Way to necro a thread, say it was going nowhere, and then lock it, lol...

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

TBD did a good job locking that thread it was only going to go one way, also she not he.

While some threads are fun, I feel like the people who start attacking others are the people who ruin it. Not the mods themselves.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

We prefer not to discuss such things on the forums. If you feel like your thread was unfairly locked, you can use the Contact Form and the Community Administrator (theblackdragon) will answer any questions.

However, if you want an answer now, we lock based on the following criteria:

1. The thread can be discussed in a bigger thread (i.e. Smash Bros threads)
2. The OP requested the lock
3. The thread is a repeat thread (i.e. Should I buy a Wii U?)
4. The discussion gets so out of hand that it cannot be recovered. Do note that temporary bans for repeat offenders may also happen.
