This is one thing that's been bothering me for awhile. When people upload avatars on NL, the image file is uploaded in the same format and quality, but on the site it's drawn in JPEG quality. While this is fine for some of the busier avatars, this makes some of the other avatars, especially the ones I've created (since they're pixelart) look bad. I'm guessing you have them stored on the server in two different sizes, the one that's publicly displayed being in JPEG format. (Bandwidth saver?)

So, here's a suggestion/request for the future: If the image is already 60x60 pixels, don't shrink the quality to a JPEG.

Mine looked great till I saw it here, then had to go back to blur it up a bit. So, I think I know what you mean. While u r here pixeldude what IS the best format for uploading?

I always upload in PNG format. It's fairly small and it preserves the image's quality.

@Odnetnin: You have to save it in PNG format. You can do this in MSPaint or Gimp.

Pixelman knows what he's talking about.

And I have something to add, I changed the .png to .jpg with 100% quality and no color subsampling in Irfanview it looked fine on the computer, 60x60 as well. Although it still changed the quality of the picture after uploaded, so it's not only .png that gets reworked, it's every picture. Surely 5kb can be hosted with no problem?

Untitled - 60x60 JPEG with perfect quality compression from .png notice it's alot better quality than when you upload it to the forums. It does not matter though, it still scrambles the quality JPEG or not.

At least give us the option to host it on another server and it only linking to it if you need to preserve bandwidth.

I'll relay this information to Ant and see what he says.

Plain old gamer :)

There's been four days, any response from Ant yet Corbie?

Firkraag, I see what you mean. Nintendo Life, do we know why this happens, does it get compressed or something? It's a shame, cos my beautiful face doesn't look as good as it could.

Woah, that's a huuuge difference... Any idea guys?

Aye, it's been several weeks now. What did Ant say, if anything?

@Firkraag: I think he said "**** off, I've got more important things to worry about ".

Worst support I've ever seen on a forum. it shouldn't take weeks just to get an answer, especially when there's not many topics in the feedback forum to begin with. A simple yes or no is not too much to ask.

I'll try to chase Ant up on this one, but as it's Bank Holiday in the UK today it might be a few days. Ant is very busy - if my counting's correct, he's responsible for coding as many as fifty websites - but I'll try to hassle him a bit.

It's not gonna happen....jpeg is the universal easy-to-use web standard. A comparable bitmap image is exponentially larger and other formats probably take more work to implement. Besides, it'll probably add to the already wackdiculous refresh times /grumble
