I was wondering. Do you think having weekly discounts/price drops would benefit or harm Nintendo in the long run? I thought everyone would be for them, but it seems not, so I'd like to get some responses.

I'm going to keep track of responses and list them here (along with credits)

Pros
-Other services (XBLA, PSN, Steam) offer weekly discounts, deals, and permanent price drops
-Could bring a lot more attention to the eShop
-People often complain games are too expensive (especially true for old retail downloads)
-Anyone know how much sales for certain games went up during the summer? I'm assuming quite a bit (can't say much here, will edit with confirmation of some sort)

Cons
-Smaller userbase means lack of motivation (WesCash)

I think they should still do them.It probably boosted their sells quite a bit but there has to be a reason they quit.Heck I wouldn't care if they just did it once a month.

I'd love some discounted eshop games. I never buy anything on Steam unless it's on sale.

However, Steam has a gigantic user base and Valve brings in a ton of revenue from it. Everyone has Steam and is familiar with it. I don't know how many people use the eshop but it probably isn't enough yet to really motivate Nintendo to have sales or discounted prices.

Exactly the opposite. Discounting games and actually spending some money on marketing the fact that there are sales will probably bring in a lot of people. - this is the whole point of sales, to get customers to your store. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would investigate further if they received spotpass notifications letting them know that there are some decent games on sale.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

There are two important things in selling: marketing and price. Enough said.

Maybe. If the sales are well-marketed then yes, that should bring in a lot of people. That could be a problem though. The only way to notify people without having them visit the store is via spotpass. And I'm not sure that spotpass messages are going to create a lot of buzz. Compare that to Steam, where I sign on to Steam every single day and see what the deals are on the front page. I doubt most people go to the eshop everyday to see what's new.

Except you'll bring more people in with lower prices, as people stated.

Weekly sales are a bit like game demos: I am pretty sure a lot of people will give some games they are hesitant towards a chance if they found it cheap, so they can be a good chance to help some games to improve their sales.

Also, if they kept a weekly sale, it would not be necessary to advertise it all the time since people would eventually know they are always there and go to the shop every week, similar to the Club Nintendo game rewards in the US and Canada, to see what is the discounted game(s) for that week.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
