Hello,
I've never used the eShop before but I plan on buying donkey kong minis but it's completely confusing me and I've searched everywhere but can't find information on how the eShop works.

1. When I start eShop I can't find any information such as my user name, it just goes into eShop. Is there no such thing as an account?
2. I've got a wii-u, how is my account there linked to my 3DS, again I Can't find anything in 3DS to link it to. Or is there no link between 3DS eshop and wii-u eshop?
3. If my 3DS breaks how do I transfer games when I don't seem to have an account - all I can see is how to transfer games by transferring from a working 3DS onto a new 3DS.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, there is no account system across platforms. If you link a Club Nintendo account with your 3ds, your downloaded 3DS game purchases will be recognized on Club Nintendo.

Yes, it's stupid not to have a universal account system. Nintendo needs to get with it.

My 3DS stopped working and I sent it to Nintendo to get repaired and all it cost was the same as one full price retail game. Much cheaper than buying a new system.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

Ah ok, so I've been looking for something that doesn't exist :)

So how do you recover games you've bought (e.g. if I lose my 3DS) when there is no 3DS account or username/password? with my PS3/Vita/Xbox I just log in as my username and all my stored games are there.

well if you lost your 3ds then thats it, you lost it, but you may try to armwrestle nintendo about it given if you have a serial code of that particular 3ds to get some of your downloads back i think but im not sure i'll need another user to confirm what i said

Nintendo fear that if you lose your 3DS, two people will be playing the same games from only one purchase.

Lets say you sell or do indeed lose your 3DS, the new owner would still be able to play the games you downloaded. So if you then buy a new 3DS and download the games you've downloaded on your old 3DS, you've cheated Nintendo out of a sale as far as they are concerned.

I'm pretty sure the OP is trolling. Unfortunately Troll is completely right in this case, lack of account system sucks

Well if your system is stolen I heard that if you file a police report Nintendo will refund you your eshop purchases provided you show them a copy of the police report, but I am not 100 percent on that since I never did that.

Thanks. No I'm not trolling, I just really didn't know how this worked and I didn't want to buy a game if it was going to the wrong account linked to my 3DS/wii-u.

But yes, this does seem like not a very good system. I'll download now then :)

tbh, this isn't explained at all very well at the Nintendo website, which is why I came here.

btw, I contacted Nintendo (they are open now) just to double check and they said to link it to a club nintendo account and keep the serial numbers then there's a strong link of ownership. Which is kind of what a few of you said. So thanks :)

I think what threw me as well was I thought there must be an account link given Monster Hunt on 3DS/wii-u.

When you choose "System Transfer" in the system settings on your old 3DS, that transfers not only your games, but also the account credentials for your eShop account. I'd recommend attempting to get your broken 3DS up and running just long enough so that you can perform that transfer.
