It has some performance issues though.

Details? Are these issues in the retail version of the 3DS Nano Assault? I plan to get this, but I want to hear more about how it compares to the retail version. I know it has everything plus extras and circle pad pro support, but this is the first I heard of performance issues.

For me, I found the first person starfox-y sections to have pretty choppy frame rate in my experiences.

Both versions or just the EX? I want to know how the EX version compares to the original 3DS retail version. Are the framerate issues with 3D on or off? I plan to get this, especially with the added cpp support since I heard good things, but I want to be sure the framerate issues aren't something new to the EX version.

I live in Australia, so It's impossible for me to play the retail version. The frame rate issues seemed to be both with and without 3D. Not to be THAT guy, but I did review the game if you're interested in watching. I did get used to it after a while, but as mentioned, its there and hinders your experience with the game. Hopefully a patch will be released; but not many people seem to have this issue, either they didn't notice it, or its a 50/50 chance of being laggy.

Thanks anyway, but I'm mainly looking for a comparison with the original. I did find out some more info and it seems the retail version does have framerate drops (read it is mostly 60 and drops to 30), but impressions I read make it sound like that it wasn't a major issue.

Yes there are Frame rate drops, but they are far from game breaking. Just finished the story mode yesterday and currently am playing through the Arcade mode to get the spot in the Online leaderboards. I can say that this may be my Favorite eshop game yet. The level variety remains interesting through the end with a decent challenge, gorgeous visuals and a good use of the CPP. I recommend this to anyone looking for an arcade style Shmup that's high on the replay value and easily accessible on the go.

I was #2 on the leaderboards once because I set the score a day after the game was released :D

Probably isn't going to last long though

Is the survival mode just missions in order or a endless stage?

In survival mode, you must clear as many stages(which are randomly selected) as possible without dying. What happens after you manage to clear every stage without dying, I do not know. I assume it cycles the stages again. The scoring system is the same as the arcade mode and thus it also sports its own online leaderboards.

I have yet to get EX, so I'm basing this off of review footage. The framerate actually looks SMOOTHER (This is someone who typically doesn't give a damn above 30 and finds most PC players pretentious as all hell) yet those drops are brand new, unlike the retail which had none.

I also see some minor graphical improvement, so I'd honestly say the framerate is made up for (especially since it may as well be patched)

The game is a twinstick shooter. Main circle pad moves the ship, second one aims where you shoot. Without the CPP, the ABXY buttons aim. Obviously not as well as using a CPP.

I seem to notice the slowdowns more with the special weapons, especially the one that rotates around you and takes out 3 enemies.

Woohoo, got 7th on Survival . . . out of 15 people, lol.

Got the chance to play with my CPP. Impressions.

Graphical improvements - They're minor at best, and really seem like a trade for the unfortunate lag issues. Patch please.
Survival Mode - Haven't gotten a chance to unlock yet.

Circle Pad Pro changes

Regular cell levels - A fair difference, but really not that big of a deal. Makes the game easier to play due to less aim time.
Rotating boss levels (there are only 2 IIRC) - Least difference definitely. You only shoot in 3 directions for the most part, so it doesn't make much of a difference. I actually alternated with buttons here.
Link Synapse - HOLY MOTHERFU- That is one major change! It actually feels like an entire game change, like from Star Fox to Sin and Punishment. Now that you have free reticle movement, the game feels brand new. It's clear however that the majority of the levels were intended to be played like Star Fox, this is especially apparent with some bosses that become complete cakewalks with dual-analog. I sort of wish they added Touch Screen controls, but that would be even easier.

Patch wishes

-Removal of framerate lag
-Full Boss Rush with all 10 bosses, rather then being split into 3 only (Why was I expecting this?)
-Touchscreen controls (super unlikely)

I also wish they'd add DLC abilities, sell the Neo stages in packs of 4 for $3.

I just got the game and I'm loving it. BTW, I read about the framerate drops from this topic in the gamefaqs board for the retail Nano Assault, so I know it has some, though I don't know if it's the same ones. The game does seem to have less framerate drops with 3D off, though they still occur. So far, nothing gamebreaking.

The cell levels are smoother with a CPP, but I was able to beat the game without the CPP on retail.

The Link Synapse levels are completely different. Do you prefer Star Fox or Sin and Punishment/Kid Icarus?

I'm sure it would be slightly easier with the CPP based on how Neo plays on the GamePad, but I found this game pretty easy to play just aiming with the buttons. You can shoot 8 ways if you press 2 buttons at the same time to shoot diagonally, and if you need any better aim than that, you can just move your ship to align yourself better. If you want you can set the camera to change orientation when you tilt the 3DS, and set the aim to be aligned with the screen, so that tilting changes the direction of your aim, but tilting the screen really only works if you want to play in 2D. In the Star Fox style stages, you just nudge the circle pad a little to aim or hold it all the way to move your ship, which is only occasionally annoying when you need to move out of the way of something and can't simultaneously aim to shoot at something.

Have you ever played them? They're the best examples I can think of.

With the CPP, you move your ship and your reticle seperately.
Without, the reticle moves with your ship (you can adjust the speed the reticle moves at)
