Also, still looking for what we should use as a "ruler" for deciding whether or not a game is a "hidden gem". I'm thinking about using eShop ratings (while not indicative of quality, they do give a rough idea of how well a title has sold). I was thinking about making the "hidden gem" status available to only games that have less than 1,000, 1,500, or 2,000 eShop ratings. Which do you think is the best indicator.

For DSiWare, 1000 is a decent marking point, lower would be fine.

For 3DSWare it needs to be a bit higher since there are lots of games that have sold a crapton (Pushmo comes to mind)

^I'll go ahead and make it 1,000 for DSiWare & 2,000 for "3DS Downloads".

EDIT: I've made this official now (and also, a game must be on sale for 2 months before it's eligible).

I had to remove Starship Defense & Crystal Monsters from the list, as they've met successful numbers (CM in particular has sold incredibly well).

For DSiWare, the game has to have less than 1,000 eShop ratings. For a "3DS Download", it must have less than 2,000 (as eShop is generally a more successful service than DSiWare).

looks at 3DS eShop in Australia

Every single game that isn't free and doesn't have "Zelda" in the title.

For Australia, it more like needs to have less than 100 ratings for eshop and less than 20 for dsiware. That's how little losers use the eshop here is Australia!

Currently playing: Rhythm Heaven, Minecraft (XBLA), Pokemon B/W 2, Halo 4, The Denpa Men: They Came By Wave, Fallblox, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GCN)

Wait! So eShop ratings only show the ratings from your own region (or worse yet, just your country)?

This complicates things...

That can be the norm for most dsiware games in Australia!

For Canada / US you can change your region to see more ratings, might work for Australia too.

There is a Game that was Released just this week that is totally flying under the Radar and that's "Bookstore Dreams" the game plays very similar to the Kairosoft titles available in the Apple market and the Android Market. Although this is a cutdown sim game it is loads of fun and gets Frantic when you have to restock books and manage book signings. Great game!

Family Tennis Flew under the Radar quite a bit and is an excellent single player Tennis game. I love the game and wish it had online Multiplayer play. I would have 5 starred the game if it had multiplayer

Haha, that's going to be one of the DSiWare games that only gets one or two ratings in the Australian eShop.

And because that rating came from me, it's going to be the lowest rated game on the eShop with just 1 star. ^_^

I didn't dislike that game to the extent that you did, but I kind of want to rate it 1 as well just to see what happens on our eshop. A game with an average of one star is going to be hilarity

@Windy, good picks! we already have Family Tennis 3D on the list (I nominated it first thing :)), and we give a game 2 months to see if it's going to sell before nominating it (this is mentioned in the op), so we'll wait a bit on Bookstore Dreams to see if it sells.

Does Picdun fall as underrated? ANd it's obvious, we all know Retro Pocket will fall in this list.

It's the same here. Most of the time, only big name games, overly casual games and cheap games (free to 2 dollars) games get more than 1000 ratings. With most DSiWare having under 50.

One hidden gem I'd like to propose is Hello Flowerz, it's a very enjoyable game cursed with a girly image and a dumb name.

I nominate Flametail (aka Maboshi Arcade's Square segment turned space shooter) with a staggering rating number of 36. My personal Pick from the pile of DSiware Puzzlers that include the Art Style series because it emulates the feel of an arcade style puzzler that takes cues from retro Space Shmups. Surprisingly, it works very well and for $5, you're sure to get a bang fo your buck. Forgot to mention the stellar soundtrack too.

Escapee Go! with a rating number of 351 is another arcade style game that takes cues from Pacman evidently. It is definitely worth a shot for $2.
