Xbox 360 - Sonic`s Ultimate Genesis Collection seems a good thing to get.

(Probably be the price of 2 VC games - no 50hz or such stupid problems).

Or get an otg adapter and any old pad to use with any Android device and wait until it is on sale.

Or get the 4 in 1 DS cartridge. (I always see it available dirt cheap).

I think the Genesis Collection was 20 bucks at Gamestop last time I checked but don't quote me.

And the DS game doesn't have perfect emulation, nor screen resolution thanks to the 3DS screen size. XL is fine though.

I already have Sonic 1 on DS (Sonic Classic Collection), Sonic 1 on PC, and Sonic 1 on iOS. I just want it on 3DS as well as a 3D Classic. And I'm sure others want it too. I bet the release date for it will be revealed in a Nintendo Direct in October.

Well, it's been over a month since I posted this thread, and not a trace of a release date for this game. (sigh) Why do I even bother... :(

I kind of thought the DS version would be ported not emulated. Sonic Jam still looks to be the best version. (The Arcade version which removes the water stages I think I would like the most).

This is really great news. I'll be getting 3D Galaxy Force II, Super Hang-On, Space Harrier and Shinobi 3.

I dunno if I'll bother with 3D Altered Beast though, because it's based on the graphically inferior home Mega Drive / Genesis console port rather than the superior System 16 arcade version.

It's been a while since I checked back at this forum. Anyways, I'm super-excited! December 5th is marked on my calendar for 3D Sonic 1! (Okay, not really, but I'm that excited for the game!)

ugh. That's a terrible filter on the Genesis shot. The arcade looks better, but the screenshot is misleading. At the proper resolution, the Genesis version doesn't look anywhere near that bad.

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection doesn't have perfect emulation. I heard the Sonic games have input lag in it and Backbone can be hit/miss with emulation. The Sonic port for 3DS is done by M2, who is generally very good with emulation and ports, so it's a safe bet that it's better than the versions in the DS Sonic Collection (which I heard plays better on DSi and 3DS, but is still flawed) and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

Not sure if the 3D classics are ports or emulation since some games have extra features like the Haya-Oh boss in Space Harrier, which was originally on SMS. Space Harrier 3DS is definitely based on the arcade with the scaling intact.

Is there anything with perfect Genesis emulation. (Commercial or anything else) ?

I think nobody has emulated the sound chip properly.

bsnes by comparison is pretty much perfect.

There is somewhere else on this site where a Japanese user (Who already owns all these) says that this is worse than the recent Mobile port.

I think connected via RGB and at 60hz I always prefer real hardware but there is quite a lot of games that I would never play through in one sitting that have no save functionality.

Sonic Jam still stands as the best versions as far as I know.

I presume Sonic 1 3DS will be essentially Sonic 1 Sonic Jam edition, but with the 3D effect and a different menu.

My experiences from playing the Japanese versions:

Space Harrier, Super Hang-On and Galaxy Force II are all great ports
Tons of extras and the 3D actually adds to the gameplay. Well worth the money.

Ecco The Dolphin, Shinobi III and Streets of Rage are pretty much straight up ports.
The 3D is pretty much on the same level as Kirby's Adventure 3D and the only things added are different difficulty modes.
Ecco plays really smoothly with the circle pad. If you've never played them before, they're a good place to start.

Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast are the worst of the whole set.
Altered Beast is the mediocre genesis port not the great arcade version and Sonic is extremely bare bones.
The mobile port of Sonic is way better, tons more features and extras. The 3D classic has none of that.

He only mentions the lack of extras, not the actual port/emulation quality. Lack of extras doesn't make a bad port or emulation. I'm aware that the sound isn't perfect, even in the best Genesis emulations, but I read from multiple sources that the Sonic games in Backbone's emulations have input lag, which instantly makes them worse than other emulations (and their games often have other issues too). From what I read, the 3D classics Sonic is very accurate to the original and much better than Backbone's or the versions in the DS Sonic Collection.

Also, my point with the Altered Beast screenshot is that it's a poorly filtered Genesis shot compared to a nice shot of the arcade. Yes, the Genesis one looks worse, but the comparison with a poorly filtered screen is unfair.

Just because this version of Sonic 1 won't have all the content the iOS & Android versions have, doesn't mean it'll be bad. The original Sega Genesis version of Sonic 1 didn't have all the new content the iOS had, but it was still an excellent game even without those features. 3D Classics Sonic 1 will still be good as its own game. Just because it'll be inferior to the iOS Sonic 1, that doesn't mean it'll be bad by any means. It'll still be the same game that gamers have loved for over 22 years.

Personally, I'm more excited for the Super Scaler ports myself, but I might get Sonic eventually. I'll probably skip Altered Beast, though I like the Genesis version. I might also pick up Shinobi III since that is an incredible game on the Genesis.
