Mode7

When Mario Clock first arrived on the scene in 2009, nobody could have predicted the impact it would have on the gaming landscape. Not only has the definition of "video game" been rewritten, the way we see all forms of media has changed in such a drastic way that it's difficult to look back and think of our lives beforehand.

Now in 2014, after countless tick-tocks, one man has done the unthinkable. Dedication and destiny have driven him to the all-time high score ever recorded in Mario Clock. That man's name is Mode7.

Mode7 acquired Mario Clock near to its North American launch date, and plays every night before bed, using the groundbreaking "alarm" feature to wake himself the next day. Before setting the alarm, he usually gathers 25-50 coins. Sometimes he collects 100 so that he can play as the Brother in Green, and on rare occasions he amasses 1200 coins to rescue the Fair Damsel.

It hasn't always been Super Mushrooms and 1-Ups along Champion's Road. There are two sides to every clock, and the bad must always accompany the good. More than once has Mode7's DSi slipped underneath a pillow, blanket, or other sound dampening item that muffled the thrilling alarm. Other times, the passion of coin collecting has distracted Mode7's attention, and he has forgotten to switch the alarm from "PM" to "AM" when applying a new setting. Yes, Mode7 has been late for work on several occasions, but never once has his faith in Mario Clock been shaken.

For years, hardcore Mario Clockers have wondered only one thing: is there a limit to the high score? It is widely known that there are at least five possible digits, a total of 99,999 coins could be collected. But what would happen with one more coin? Would the score roll over to zero? Would the coin simply not be recorded? Or could it be that a sixth digit is possible? To players of New Super Mario Bros. 2, this may not seem like many coins. But I assure you, to Clockers, this is the dream.

It's a tale as old as time. The hour hand points at the lessons of the past, the minute hand holds firm to the present, and the second hand shows the way to the future. Mode7's quest is far from over. At his current rate, he will reach the one million mark in 2054. Until then, the mystery of Mario Clock's potential limitless power remains unanswered. Perhaps it is best to be left wondering, for it is from that wonder that dreams are born.
