So, expectations are this will be awesome, and really short. Same as Flipper and Ace Mathician. I wish Hugo's games besides Flipper 2 had level editors. These single-screen games would benefit greatly from them.

He also mentioned a potential iOS port. While I don't expect that'll happen, if it does he should also go to Android so I can play and compare.

Looks kinda fun.
But then again, its short, and I like games I can play over and over again.

Do you truly look at things positively? For example, do you look at the glass like it's always full? (Half water, half air.) Or when someone "lets the cat out of the bag," do you think it's because the person felt sorry for the cat stuck in the bag? There is a positive side to almost everythin...

Plan on getting Color Commando at a later date if not today.

First impressions (instead of finishing my essay)

1. Comparisons to Wrecking Crew aren't that off... But they are off.
2. I like this more then Flipper 2, but less than Ace Mathician and Flipper.
3. Good: Original concept, best spritework yet, fun to play
Bad: Player moves too slow, music gets repetitive

Another note, this is the longest of Hugo's games thus far not counting replay, due to the difficulty. I clocked in almost 2 hours...
@HugoSmits you need to get a staff and make bigger games for the next consoles you move to.

Lenght of the games isn't based on a staff problem, but rather a money problem. I need to pay myself, the pixel artist and the sound dude. If I create a extra world, I need to pay for the new tiles and sprites as well as the new song. It just costs too much.

The e-shop seems to be a little bit better.. so hopefully I can make some 5 euro games on there which will be bigger

Ok, I'm up to about 1 hour played of this game, and its pretty good for less than £2, but how the hell do you get the third coin in 4-2? As far as I can tell after about 1/3 of my total playtime with the game on that level, its impossible.

I can't even get past 4-4, let alone get the coins there

Ok, got past 4-4 and have now seen the end credits, with 1:20 on the clock according to the Activity Log (20 minutes was spend trying to get the coins in 4-2, without any success, but whatever). Still haven't gotten all the coins, and I most likely never will (missing them all in levels 4-2 to 5-4 except 5-1 and 5-3, seriously, as far as I can tell they were impossible).

In my opinion, the game should have been a bit more lenient with the character's hitbox (so many times I have died on a ladder because of one pixel of foot), and the ladders should have been slightly wider, a pixel or two would of made some of the later levels much less cheap.

Its pretty good, 7/10 I would say for the price tag. Much better than most of the Teyon thrash on DSiWare, but its no Aura-Aura Climber.

Hey guys,

Don’t know how this happened (currently trying to find that out) but a ‘older’ version is released in Europe. This means that you cannot collect all coins in 4-2 and 4-3

There is a good solution for this though:

During the ‘Hugo Smits presents’ screen hold L+R+ X or Y to unlock all levels. Including the secret level that you would miss out on.

All levels in world 5 are doable, I have played through the EU version to make sure

For level 5-2: climb up the ladder you start at. When the flying monsters are at the top fall to your left and you will be able to collect 2 coins.
Climb on the ladder at the far left. Go as high as possible, and let yourself fall to the right. Make sure the flying monsters are either below or way above you so they don’t hit you.

For level 5-3: First get the green paint-powerup. Climb back up and let yourself fall to the right. Pickup the pink paint-powerup. Let yourself fall again to the right, but be sure to steer back left to land on the platform below.

Use the green paint to dissolve the green flying monster. Let yourself fall to the right and collect the second coin.
Use your pink paint to dissolve the pink monster. Place the spot between the purple paint-powerup and the last coin. Now you can climb the ladder and collect it.
For level 5-4: Climb down the ladder near you just enough that the purple monsters don’t hit you. Wait till the gap is good enough (timing is key) and climb down to the platform, quickly move to the right and pick up the coin. Then climb back down fast.

When you have the pink paint-powerup. Use it over the wall (that separates the pink and purple monsters). Climb up the ladder till almost the top, wait till the pink monsters move through the wall, then fall to your left.

The last coin is easy, just drop on it when you fall on the exit.

For level 5-5: climb down the first ladder and pick up the pink paint-powerup. Climb back up. Now walk to the second ladder and climb down as far down as possible without getting hit by the pink monster. Wait until the pink monster is almost against the wall. Place the pink paint over the wall.

Wait until both pink monsters just passed under you, quickly climb down and collect the green paint-powerup and coin. Climb back up as fast as possible.
Place the green paint-spot over the sitting green monster. Climb down the ladder just before the sitting green monster (make sure the pink monsters are on the otherside) climb down and collect the coin.

Climb back up, walk past the sitting green monster and collect the last coin. Drop yourself to the exit.

Good fun game in spite of it's short length ... took me a little under an hour to finish, although I still have a few coins to get. I'm disappointed to hear that there are coins you can't actually get, but at least now I won't be trying over & over.

I agree, the hit detection seems sporadic. Especially is this true on the ladders ... sometimes enemies seem to pass through the top of my head w/no damage, yet other times I die confused as to how I was actually touched.

I wish the levels recorded how long you took to beat them. A timer seems like a simple way to encourage replay value.

I enjoyed the game, well worth 2 bucks. And I would gladly pay more if there was enough content to justify it. Bring on the sequel!

P.S. No matter how hard I try, I can only seem to get one of the coins in 5-2 when I fall off the ladder ... can't quite reach the one in the middle and not sure what I'm doing wrong. I wish I could just hit left and fall off the ladder, but doesn't seem to work unless I'm also moving up or down.

@TG1 I see you are from the US, so assume you downloaded the US version of the game? in that case; all coins are collectable.
Only the EU version of the game has this problem for level 4-2 and 4-3.

I thought I did a pretty good job on collision detection

Here's a picture showing the collision boxes that I use in the game :

As you can see, only the real base of the character is used for collision. Giving you quite some error-margin!

Ah, I misread ... good to know that I can get the coins (assuming I figure out how, lol) More replay value!

I appreciate the pics you posted, they actually seem to illustrate what I was saying ... it seems to be fairly forgiving up by the head, yet overly strict by the feet. It's extra challenge though, which will keep me playing longer. And I really do like the game ... in fact I like it so much I'm downloading Flipper & Ace Mathician! Do you have a favorite out of the 3?

@TG1 hm.. that's a good question. Flipper is special to me because it was my first game. Ace Mathician was just really great to work on. I made that game within 3 months because everything just seemed to 'click'.

I think it depends on how much you like Color Commando; Ace Mathician is pretty similair, I think. Flipper is a totally different expierence

Thanks for sharing I like Color Commando very much. In fact I sent you an e-mail about the game, which I hope you'll reply to at your convenience. Thanks again for the game, and your support of DSiWare & Nintendo fans!

Hugo is it possible to contact Nintendo and patch the EU version? I bought the game today but I haven't played it yet.

4-2, 4-3, and 5-2 are the only levels where I can't get every coin (I've got 2 on each) In 5-2 no matter how many times I try I cannot collect both coins when I fall off the ladder (in fact I don't even appear to be that close to the other coin) Can't imagine what I'm doing wrong, but it does give the game replayability for those worried about the length. If anyone has any tips for these 3 levels, I'd appreciate it.

I'm currently in the process of asking. Although, you can easily use the cheat to unlock the 1 extra bonus level (hold L+R+ X/Y at "Hugo Smits Presents").

@TG1 make sure you are totally at the top of the ladder (bumb your head into the block next to the ladder on the left to make sure). Then just press left and
believe in it! (it's very important you believe in yourself!). It should work then
