I'm 99% sure the 3DS will be fully compatible with the DSi, which means all DSiWare, two cameras, internal memory, music player, the whole package.

EDIT: That includes all DS games and no GBA slot (which means no guitar hero, tony hawk motion, or rumble pack)

I'm not sure. There will obviously be money to be made in keeping DSiWare availible to the 3DS, but at the same time I think a fresh start would give new titles a better chance of standing out. Either way, they really need to redesign the shop to help properly market the games.

I think DSiware will be available on the 3DS and I even think Nintendo will allow a license transfer(so we'd have to redownload them). I could be completely wrong though.

That's a good point. The shop is really slow and clumsy, and it would be silly to use the same shop on the 3DS. So they will probably keep the games but make the shop better. Or make a separate "DSi" section in the shop.

Or we could just transfer the games through an SD card, if it had enough "Bytes"

Yes, if the Ninty has claimed that the 3DS will be DSi backwards compatible (and it will), it has to have DSiWare. Although it's anyone's guess whether you can transfer your DSiWare license to the 3DS (although I hope it's yes; it would be terrible to have to keep my DSiWare games on my DSi)

I'm pretty okay.

I've got hundreds of dollars of DSiWare on mine. So I am hoping they will allow us to transfer to the newer system. I'm tired of my dsi system, ready for something new... Can't wait to get the red 3DS system! Kid Icarus! Ahhh...

I've always had faith with Nintendo when it comes to hardware and software. I know that when they try, they can blow everyone away.

...However I pretty much have zero faith in their online system being anything above complete garbage. (I'd love to be wrong)
I'm expecting DSiWare to be available to 3DS users, but not having a way to transfer previously bought DSiWare games from your DSi.
If that's the case, you can bet your butt I'm not gonna touch Nintendo's online system ever again.

Guys, Nintendo hasn't even announced the 3DS's online shop yet so there's no information about transferring. You're welcome to speculate all you like but I suspect some of you are getting yourselves worked up over nothing, so relax and know we'll bring you what we know when we know it

True. I guess we are just "scared" that all of our hard-earned money we spent on the DsiWare titles will be able to be saved and salvaged for later gameplay. I don't know about you but I hate to blindly throw money at something not knowing if it's going to "virtually" be there as well as "physically" be there in the future. This is one of the reasons why people hate online shopping because of the "unknown" factor concerning it's physical whereabouts as time goes on. Something bought in a department store you physically know you are going to have for a while, whereas online purchases... you just don't know in this digital age. So, sorry for overreacting, I think it's human nature though and we deserve answers as soon as possible. Can we petition Nintendo to let us know as soon as possible to ease our fears regarding DSiWare?

I expect Nintendo will offer some way to transfer DSiWare to the 3DS. Sometimes it doesn't seem like it, but I do feel Nintendo is serious about their online services.

The problem is, Nintendo was very much behind both Sony and Microsoft in terms of building online competencies. Remember, both Sony and Microsoft, through their computer and software businesses, already had an online heritage when it came time to put it into their consoles.

Creating an online infrastructure is not as easy as we all like to pretend it is. It costs a lot of money in terms of R & D, and yes, mistakes are made in the early days. Nintendo is very much playing catch up in this space, but again, I believe they are serious about it over there. I think there will be some way to play DSiWare you've already purchased on the 3DS.

IF you are able to transfer all your DSiWare titles, would you do so, and then sell your DSi? or what?

That would be a personal preference. Me, I probably would, considering the 3DS has all the capabilities of the DSi and then some. But if Nintendo wants to keep its core portable gaming customers happy and carry them over to the 3DS they will allow this.

That's pretty much how I feel WaltzElf, it's easy to forget that Mario Kart DS was Nintendo's first Online game ever.

I can't find the source but Cammie apparently said that transfers were a concern and that they're working on it. I predict if anything it will be a license transfer so all saves data will be lost or potentially if they work some magic through Club Nintendo or SD Card which automatically locks to the 3DS.... it'll be interesting though.

Of course, as consumers approach an upgrade path from their existing DS units, there is one problem: there's no migration path for users' collections of downloadable DSiWare games from one hardware unit to the next. This impacts developers strongly -- it discourages gamers from buying these games with new hardware on the horizon.

"It's something we recognize is an issue and it's something we're talking about and thinking about and we want to make sure [of for] our loyal fans," says Dunaway."

I'd say the scales are tipping towards likely transference now.

Awesome!! Thank you for posting that... My fears have been quelled for the time being!

There will probably be something like a VC only it will be DSiware.
The 3DS is backward compatible with all previous DS systems.
But I dont think you can transfer your DSiWare from system to system.

I don't think everything will transfer, like looksley's lineup for example. The camera is above the top screen so it's gonna at least need a patch to transfer. They can probably do it with most games but they can't just copy and paste.

That's what scares me. I am starting to think more and more that they are NOT going to allow dsiware to transfer over. I think they will probably start fresh with 3DS-Ware, and if they do that, they will lose my (and a whole lot of other ppl's) trust forever. SO I hope i am wrong!
