The DS will live on inside the 3DS. See, it's right there in the name.

Well my thoughts are the other reason Nintendo's holding back on big releases for the 3DS is to make the transition from DS/i to 3DS smoother for fans and devs

That sentence made no sense.

I meant the that the ds could live on for years due to the high pricetag of the 3DS and I was asking people if they want the ds to live for a short time or live for 2-3 years.

Well, I say that I think they should probably keep selling DS games for a while, because there will be those who have just gotten a 3DS and don't have much, if any, of a DS library.

I think the DS and DSi might survive....People still will be buying DS and DSi for their younger kids.

I wonder if the 3ds will only be out for say 3 years like the gba I mean its a jump up from the dsi but not as much as the gba to the ds jump I just doubt the 3ds will last 6 years what do you guys think.

Hopefully because the DS is so cheap to produce games on, we;ll see support years after the 3DS, much like with the PS2 after the PS3.

I hope so might try and get it around may or june. But I don't think the 3ds will last for as long as ds its just too similar and if you look at nintendo's handheld history similar handhelds such as gbc or gba get succesors fast.

I still saw little kids playing GBAs last year. Maybe the same will happen for the DS.

black and white aren't really examples of proper long term support like new pokemon games 2 years after the 3ds launch would be.Basically I don't expect to be getting 6th gen pokemon on my dsi but the percentage of the ds userbase who activley buy games is smaller than the percentage of the xbox 360 userbase who activley buy games. The 3ds is more for hardcore gamers while the ds is more casual in terms of who wont see it as just another ds. In other words alot of people who have a ds buy a few casual games like brain training and wont want a 3ds while hardcores who do will buy many aaa titles so it depends on the percentage of harcore gamers who will provide huge 3ds software sales in the install base.If its high the ds will die fast if its low the ds will die slower.

I completely disagree. The 3DS is not meant for hardcore gamers, at all. It's meant for both casual and hardcore gamers, much like the DS now. I mean, one of their release titles is Nintendogs+Cats. Not quite hardcore....
They definitely still want the casual gamers to play this system. The 3D is an example of that. Casual people might see it's in 3D and think "Oh that's neat. Let's buy that cuz it plays games and movies in 3D!!"
Just the new DS of the time, is all.

Is this a signature?

I meant that if the amount of 3ds hardcore early adopter will determine how fast the ds dies as in suppose if they have a userbase of 50 mil and it was 80% hardcore the ds would die faster as they would provide good software sales so developers would be more keen to support the 3ds and drop the ds faster. On the other hand if the user base was 80% casual the devs would support the ds longer as 3ds software sales would be weaker.

I don't know how they can have a full successor to the 3DS in just a couple years, at the soonest probably 2016.

Nintendogs + Cats is gonna be the most hardcore game ever.

This rumor about the discontiueation of ds games betterm not be true because its unlikely that my mom will let me upgrade and i just got dsi xl. How many people even own the 3ds anyway?

as of Black Friday, 2.37 million people in the US alone, huge userbase right there, not as big as the DS, but it's selling faster than the DS did, and may overtake it in 5-10 years, I anticipate DS software being sold for another 2-3 years, 4-5 for digital DSiWare, after that, it'll be all 3DS all the time
