For the past few days I've been thinking about all of the Pokemon games and the advancements that each generation has brought. This is what I've come up with so far:
Gen 1: Base Game (Foundation)
Gen 2: Genders, breeding, hold items, time (day/night, clock functions), balancing types (Dark and Steel), rudimentary weather (Sandstorm)
Gen 3: Natures, Abilities, weather
Gen 4: Alternate forms
Gen 5: ?
Gen 6: Balancing type (Fairy), Mega-Evolutions, horde battles, 252 EV cap
For some reason I come up blank on generation 5. Granted, it's my least favorite generation, but there must be SOME new mechanic that gave it a purpose. Is anyone able to fill this in a bit more? Let's leave out graphics and the PokeNav/Gear/Whatchamacallit of each generation since they change each game and don't serve much purpose in the core game.

I said web, not online. Gen 5 introduced the concept of linking your game to your online pokemon account and use your computer to enhance your playing experience.
It also introduced the Pokemon Link feature, which allows other games and apps to send information to the main pokemon games.
But really, Gen 5 added quite a bit to the pokemon franchise cough hidden abilities cough
THERE WE GO!
and yeah Resubale TM's (a blessing) and triple/rotation battles as stated earlier.
I'll give credit for the hidden abilities and reusable TM's, but that story...
Does anyone like the triple/rotation battles? I feel they're too much of a gimmick, unlike the more strategic double battles (which I forgot to put on the list for Gen 3).

Rotation and triple battles are pretty strategic and can be very fun.
I remember one time I had a rotation battle with a friend and his screen reflected off a mirror behind him, so I could see all and every one of his movements.
He wanted to poison me, I rotated to a pokemon immune to it.
He wanted to counter my pokemon with a super effective move, I rotated to a diferent one resistant to it.
Repeat until you have a very frustrated and scared friend.
Yeah, I guess that Pokemon isn't so good. Why don't you just throw that one in the trash?
Oh wait, what's that? Is that a Pokemon? Is that Pokemon literally garbage? Why I think it is.
Can't really argue with trubbish. But still most of the Gen 5 pokemon were far better than anything we got in Gen 3 atleast. Really though, stop being a genwummer, Quagsire would be useless without it's hidden ability.

Gen V also introduced the phenomena, like the Rustling grass, rippling water, etc. A cool way of getting evolved forms of some Pokémon and Audino gave you a TON of experience.
I also liked how the experience would be distributed in a way that the weaker Pokémon would receive more experience. That helped me a lot when leveling up for evolutions.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
