Topic: What changes would you like to see happen to the DSi's existing features/software?

Now that the DSi has been out for a little while, I've noticed a couple of things that would really make the whole 'whee i've got a DSi' experience more fun... i'm not talking about a Virtual Console DSi service or better DSiware releases or bringing out a game/app we all really really want or anything else that's been brought up over and over and over again here in the forums, though, I'm talking about changes to features/software that are already out in the NA/EU/AUS regions right now. For example, here's my (short) list:

(a) the option to copy recorded sound files to the SD card, in case you caught something especially hilarious and want to save it for posterity or use it for something else (ringtone, computer startup/shutdown noises, embed it in a YTMND, etc.). It would also be nice if we could send recorded sound files to friends via wireless communications (like you can photos with the DSi Camera software).

(b) a text-only version of the DSi Browser. we already know it won't load flash (which would probably bog it down even worse D:), so all I really use it for myself is to check blogs, GameFAQs, or forums, and most pertinent information in these three areas is going to be in text form anyway... if not loading images will help it load pages faster, it would be great to at least have the option to not load them.

(c) an actual 'home screen' when you tap the power button where (among other possible options?) you can turn wireless communications on and off on the fly (great for if you forgot to take care of it before you started up a game)... if not that, an option in the settings where you can allow games to start up wireless communications on their own (the way it used to be, the way that worked just fine, thanks) would be great. They could even put parental controls on that option (it wouldn't work unless you were cleared to use wireless communications anyway), whatever, i'd be happy if I knew I didn't have to mess around with it at all anymore.

So, I'm curious to know what have you other guys with DSis (ha, that rhymed) have noticed about your shiny new toys that you would like to see changed too.

Home > Settings > Download Images > Off

You can also switch to single-column mode (good for reading text) by tapping the menu button in the bottom right and tapping "Column View".

One down, two to go.

I'd like some of the issues with Opera fixed. The Canvas support is totally borked, the DPad events don't work right, you can read the scroll location, you can't cancel the select, etc, etc, etc. These are generally minor things, but they add up to a real pain for developers.

Tap the power button. It works as a 'home' button.

I want, oh I dunno, an actual 'killer app' for the thing rather than 'Nintendo does Apple' apps... Lets see a game with some MEAT exclusive to DSi, I gots no problems with microware, but I want some mega ware as well.

Hardcore, casual = marketing. The real divide is between arcade and narrative games.

I didn't quite mean it in that sense, I meant it more like the way the Wii is set up, where you can change your Wiimote settings without having to exit out to the main system menu. tap the button once for the menu to pop up, where you can then use the stylus to modify your settings and/or exit the game entirely. it would be nice if you could change your wireless communications settings on the fly like that, in case you're like me and have a tendency to forget to do so before you start up the game.

I agree. That's possibly the only thing that I miss right now. I guess it can be fixed with a firmware update, someday, somehow? I have no clue about programming and stuff

Oh, and... being able to display photos on the top screen if I have all my pics on the SD card. Right now it will only display pics with a star that are on the system. That's not cool lol

i'd like to see faster loading times while using the DSIware store

I'd like to see the ability to log into a wifi service and then switch to a game and play the game over that wifi service. Currently this isn't possible on the DSi. That means you can't, for example, play online games at Starbucks, or even a free wifi services that require you to first agree to a license agreement before proceeding. I can do this on my iPod Touch, but not on my DSi.

Also, it needs a much, much, much better browser, primarily needing way faster display speed. The current browser is insanely slow. Completely unusable.

The current browser is quite fast and usable if you use it properly. First of all, make sure you set the text to wrap at the width of the screen, so you're not panning left and right constantly to read. Second, know your sites, and base the mode on the content -- if you're reading an article, most sites will simply be much easier to use in Column mode; others, like the front page of a site with many story blurbs, are far better in the standard mode. It might make sense in some cases to turn images off, but I've been reading plenty of news sites and blogs with it, and not one of them has required me to shut off images in order for it to load with only a small pause. Also, make sure to actually use the screen switching button; it's a much smoother and simpler kind of navigation in many cases when you have the overview on the bottom screen and the zoom in on the top, but once you get to the text of something and start reading down, it makes sense to switch out so that you can flick the page upwards as you read.

Honestly, your "completely unusable" remark is completely untenable. My profession is web application development, and I'm someone who generally hates portable browsers, but Opera has done a fine job tailoring the features to the device. Yes, the iPod Touch also has a remarkable browser with its own advantages, but I'd not go so far as to say that it is all that much preferable to the DSi. Hitting an on-screen keyboard with your fingers simply pales in comparison to writing out your text with the stylus and the built-in handwriting recognition, which is very good once you get a feel for it. In most cases, I'd rather be browsing on a DSi with my stylus held comfortably in hand than running my fingers all over the screen of an iPod.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

I'd like to be able to use my WPA encrypted DSi to play people on older WEP encrypted DS games. Until they come out with any new DSi games, I won't be playing anyone online.
