Not sure how much this would influence Nintendo. They have very tightly planned out marketing strategies and timings. I'm sure VC on the DSi will appear at some point, but Nintendo have probably already worked out exactly when the best moment will be to market the product.
Maybe that's one of the reasons the GBA slot was removed? If Nintendo plan to release GB/GBA titles for download (at a price) they'd want to deny people the chance to get those games any other way (ie. by inserting old, cheap, second hand cartridges). I have a couple of GBA cartridges I can't use anymore now I have a DSi. If those same games come out on a DSi VC service, I'd be tempted to buy them.
Yup, right now I don't want to play any GB or GBA games but if they appear on VC I'll be tempted. Actually, I just remembered I have a GB Color and some games in my wardrobe. That one's a relic. I'll keep it for posterity.
Well if there was a VC on DSi, then if you had an old save file of the same, they would make a DS Card extension to insert GBA games. It's not linear but it just shot into my brain.
