Underrated? Come on, is considered by most gamers the best RPG in SNES, and sometimes the best game Square made... It's not underrated, even in Europe we didnt get it untill the DS port.
I wouldn't say it's underrated at all. It's rated near the top by most RPG fans. Their opinions mean more to me than the opinions of some random kids. It is sad, though, that they can't see greatness when it's staring them right in the face.
Lieutenant Commander of the Lesbian Love Brigade
There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
under-appreciated? maybe among younger gamers who take one look at 2-D graphics and run, lol.

its not underappreciated, its a very treasured and highly sought after game in all its forms. if you mean compared to big names like FF and DQ then I guess.

Nope, not by a long shot since Square-Enix thinks its a great idea to re-release it on the DS for 40.00USD, and complain that gamers don't like this game because it didn't sold well.
Most people who appreciate the game, already own and would rather play the original SNES version. So the DS remake is mainly to try to pull in new fans to the game. Obviously didn't work out as well as Square had hoped. But this is one of the most revered (and deservedly so) RPGs ever created, so I don't think it's really what I would call "underrated" by any means.
I personaly am not too big a fan of the game. It is great by all means, I just cant really see how it could possibly be the best RPG ever created. I mean the teamwork system is great but I just cant get into the game. Maybe because I dont really like straight-forward "save the world" games, even if that IS the objective. I love FFIV, but I love how the story is really complex and has great character development. Though I like RPGs better when their placed in modern times too (TWEWY, Devil Survivor), but even with the time traveling, it still feels like its another medieval fantasy game. But that is just me.
@irken004: you can either have it on 'active', where the computer continues to attack you according to enemy speed no matter what you're doing at the time, or 'wait', where the computer pauses while you're in a menu choosing items/spells/whatever but resumes when you exit out of the menu or when you finally choose something. it asks you at the very beginning of the game which way you'd rather have the battles run, and IIRC you can switch the settings in-game if you make a mistake or change your mind, so no worries on that one either.

hmm.. that remind me of the battle system in Final Fantasy 4 on the DS, it had a similar gameplay style

pretty much. either way, it's not completely turn-based, but it's up to you whether or not it still has appeal. :3
