Well, it's been a day since the DSi LL/DSi XL has been announced but is there too many upgrades to our daily portables and not a true successor? Let me break it down:

Playstation Portable

  • The PSP-1000
    went to....
  • the Slim & Lite (2000),
    then the...
  • PSP-3000
    and now...
  • the PSPgo.

Nintendo DS

  • The original DS (aka DS Phat)
    upgraded to the much-needed.....
  • DS Lite,
    then went to the...
  • DSi system
    and then DSi upgraded to.....
  • the DSi LL/XL

So why too many redesigns and upgrades? Love it? Hate it? Discuss below!

Ya, I hate it. I was almost heartbroken when it was time to say goodbye to my DS Phat, so no more upgrades for a while!

I hate all these upgrades. Just release a new handheld already.

Doesn't really bother me too much. You don't have to get every incremental upgrade.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

I think it's good that the handhelds get many upgrades. It's not that you have to buy every single one but the systems get better and better slowly.

I fear that this might become the new handheld dance. Instead of releasing new systems, the companies just keep upgrading the previous system and call it a day. Let's think about it. How different is the PSP1000 to the PSP-Go? A lot, if I'm not mistaken.

The only thing that gives pirates a chance against ninjas is the ability to grow awesome beards. Other than that, they're completely outmatched.

I think that's the point. They don't want to release a completely new handheld since the old one sells good. Why would Nintendo release a new handheld when the DS is so popular. Same with Sony. So like I said I think it's good and people shouldn't complain since they don't have to buy every upgrade.

That's actually a benefit I think, because instead of with a whole new device, the same games will work on the current gen system longer.

If they were all "next-gen" consoles i would be angry to change the generation too fast.
But they are simply alternative version of the same console, Like the NES 2, or the Mega Drive II, you don't need to have to upgrade, you oldie model it's enough to run games.
I never bought a GBA SP, and i only have an DS Lite because the 1º one died on me, for example.

It's sad that so many people have to buy the latest gadgets all the time that they keep releasing new ones just to lure them in.

I'm tired of upgrades. Either give us a new system or stop! :)

Same goes with colors, release all of them at once or not at all...hate how about four years later they FINALLY decide to release a black-colored Wii. >_>

It's Pointless arguing over it i mean nobody is forcing you to buy an upgrade version or a new System it's all your choice as for me all i buy is Nintendo Stuff till this day i haven't bought a single non-Nintendo system since i don't need any other Game System cause i choose to live this way.

I think there has been far too many upgrades recently, but that has always been the way with technology it's just the way it works.I for one am not sucked into it (I'm still on my DS phat and love it.) but there must be a lot of people who are as they keep selling. I think that Nintendo this generation has really learnt stolen a lot from Apple's marketing schemes and general asthetic and it's worked for them (in a buisness sense at least). As others have said you don't have to buy them ,though having said that if I actually liked the DS XL and had just bought a DSi then I may feel differently. I really wanna black Wii but I cannot justify selling mine (+VC games) just for a different colour ,but the fact that I'm thinking about it shows that Nintendos evil scheme is working well!

It's pointless to argue about it, if you want it, you should get it; no one is forcing you.
