What's so great about the 3DS? I don't think the world is ready for 3D yet. I hope it doesn't completely replace the DS line. If so, I'm not getting it.

DS graphics aren't that good. I have always believed that graphics don't matter as long as the game is good, but I'm getting tired of blocky polygons with low-resolution textures. If Nintendo wants to compete they need to improve in this area, and somehow I don't think a new model in the DS line will cut it.
I am psyched to have objects popping out of the screen. I think the main reason some people are against the 3D aspect is that it hasn't been done well in the past. Besides, Nintendo is all about innovation, and things usually work out for them in that area. Plus, they've already explored the 3D territory, so now they probably have a better game plan.

Ummm, the 3DS is the successor to the DS. It was kind of made to replace the DS. Nintendo knows Sony has a PSP-2 coming this year or next so they aren't waiting around. We've seen this happen before when the DS came out. Nobody really marketed or cared about GBA games two years after the DS hit the market resulting in the GBA slot getting thrown out once the DSi hit. The same will happen with DS games (though probably not as quickly as the GBA production died), production of new DS games will end and developers will eventually only support 3DS games because that's where the money will be made.
Even after the 3DS comes out, the regular DS should still last another couple years with some more games. The DS came out in 2004 but the GBA lasted all the way until 2007.

I don't know about you, but I've been living in 3D all my life, and I've been tired of looking at everything on 2D screens for a long time now. What do you mean the world's not ready for 3D? I really don't think 3D is going to be mindbogglingly confusing to people.

Honestly I passed on the DS so I could afford a Wii. I am kind of interested to see what the 3DS has to offer and what the graphics are capable of and as well what kind of games are going to be released for it.
Its Nintendo directly attacking Sony's 3D future plans. (they have alot of plans for 3D if you dint know) Its like Sony saying oh ya well i have Motion controlers too nah naha. and then Nintendo saying, a ya? well then Im going to Piss on your 3D cake Plans! aHa!!
So expect alot of hardcore games for the 3DS cause its targueting the Hardcore Crowd from sony and xbox360. If you like the casual stuff the DS will still do the trick for a long ass time still.
Dont see the 3DS as a replacment. Its to Piss off Sony kick the PsP right out of the market and compeat with Apple's Ipod or whatever that thing is with all the Apps. is.

Exactly. At first it will be strange, but this is what our world already is, and in twenty years, probably everything will be 3D.

I generally try to control myself with low expectations on things like this. Especially stuff like this when we have no real idea of what it will be like.... but not so much this time.
I remember in 2006 I had a Computer Sciencey type regrettable tech discussion (16MB of RAM!) on a bus about the DS. My friend noticed that a lot of people owned a DS and then on discussing this we asked ourselves "what more could this be for a gaming device?". Keeping in mind I was at the time HUGELY against the PSP, I suggested that the ONLY thing the DS could do better was visuals. Saying that "the DS can do portable 2D gaming fine, the problem is 3D portable gaming" concluding that in "5 years" I would hope there is a Gamecube level portable with the battery life of the DS Lite.
My friend argued that 3D gaming didn't sit well on portables. That it wouldn't work unless they got an analogue stick that worked properly. That even then you don't pull a portable out of your pocket while waiting for a bus to play a 50+ hour RPG on a 3" screen. You Play Tetris and Tetris DOESN'T need awesome graphics it just needs clear graphics.
Since that bus argument the iPhone launched, the Wii launched and the PSP largely failed. From the iPhone to WiiWare Apps and DLC have become much more important than they were back in 2006. Whatever comes out tomorrow, if it close to the "DS but with Gamecube like power" I am very anxious to see whether that works or not. The only extra demand... Apps... If that is all it does, and looking at the hype thats a very conservative hope, then I will be VERY happy. ... and its not even 5 years since 2006! Insta buy!
I just think the 3ds will be awesome regardless, because it's freaking Nintendo, 3D will be cool if it's "done" correctly, and I don't doubt the the "HD" graphics. My reasoning is because PSP alredy had almost PS2 graphics, and if a PSP 2 comes out, it probably will have awesome graphics. There just better be Miis that are made automaticly from the camera, and other nice stuff(apps)(what above said)

I really look forward to the 3DS. Maybe nintendo will bring back some of there franchises onto the 3DS. I just hope they keep the DSi Shop Intresting. when the 3DS is released i don't wanna see crappy games thrown on the DSi shop and all the good ones on the 3DS! The 3DS WILL be awesome but however, i think the PSP 2 and iPod Touch (or iPod Touch 4G if we're lucky) will still keep a good fight with the 3DS. This is going to be a good HandHeld War.
