Ah, that's good news for DS fans, crisis averted. Hopefully both versions make their way here, as the PS3 version looks much better, from what few poorly scanned screens we have so far. I just hope you don't need Move to do the spells that are done with the stylus on DS.
whew, i was waiting for news on the DS version, glad to hear it's still in the works. definitely interested in this.

I was going to get the DS version, but the trailer for the PS3 version looks too good. Also, the PS3 version might have dual voice acting, while the DS version will probably only have English voices. (English dubs for the Ghibli movies have a bad habit of sucking, even more so than dubbing in general. Of course, I realise that's no reason this game can't have good dubs, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. =/)
Buuuuut, if there's any variation whatsoever between the two, gameplay-wise, I'll probably get them both.

Well, as far as we know, Ghibli might not be the ones in charge of voice acting / dubbing. All that seems to be confirmed so far is they are doing the animations for cut scenes and helping with animation for the game. Level 5 didn't do a horrible job with voice acting for Dragon Quest 8 in the English version. NPCs were mostly not interesting, but Trode and Yangus are both voiced very well. I laugh at just about everything they say, especially when talking to each other.
I finally got around to watching the gameplay trailer for this game on the PS3 and it is absolutely breathtaking. I can't believe how beautiful this game looks. It is truly magnificent. From what I've read on various sites, it seems that the DS and PS3 versions may be different when it comes to content. If that is the case then I will definitely have to get both games. I still would like to see this game on the 3DS instead of the DS but as of right now I'm just hoping that it actually makes it to the US.
Not sure how to link directly to the video, but this has what I think is a new DS trailer. I'm really impressed with how naturally and perfectly the DQ8 and Ghibli styles mesh. You'll even notice that the alchemy pot from DQ8 returns in a slightly different form.
Alright, that's it; I'm getting both versions. And I think both Ghibli and Level-5 is popular enough in the west to warrant a western release. And even if they aren't, neither the DS or PS3 have region locks, so importing is also an option.

Playing an RPG without knowing the language is not exactly an appealing option, but I suppose it is an option.
I agree they're both popular enough here. It just bothers me that there's no word on a release. The DS game at least comes out this year in Japan, and it's been known of for quite awhile now.
I guess it's just not high profile enough for them to care about making international announcements far in advance.

Level 5 had very, very little to do with the localisation of Dragon Quest VIII, or the story at all actually. Level 5 is only responsible for coding the game, Armor Project and Square Enix are the ones who do the actual design work.
More on topic, I might get the DS version if it gets localised but I'm pretty meh about the game.
