I don't think you can hold notes forever. There is an an echo note feature in the manual under clip editor. You can make notes echo. I know it isn't what you are looking for, but is something people don't know if they skim the manual.
I have done a couple mario 3 overworld themes and did each one in about 20 mins as they are short. I will put all 9 together on youtube all at once. My MM2 Intro/Title is about half done. The hard thing for me is picking instuments that will go well together. I hope to see a few of us enter.
@breegullblaster: legato feature is not present in Rytmik, due to its sample-based nature and due to program and hardware limitations. We tried to make sample selection so clever that man can find some solution both for short and for long instruments. There is polyphony feature and echo effect for each instrument. And there is the way to limit the lenght of instrument note if you insert note with zero volume after the note you want to cut.
I bought Rytmik even though I'm musically illiterate. Aside from the tutorials on YouTube, can anybody recommend a website or a tool that would help me learn how to break a song down into its parts? I can't really play by ear and even if I could, I would probably only be able to recognize the melody.
Even something that I can blatantly copy into the game would help me learn.

You could use sheet music, like full orchestra or something. There are quite a few sites that have sheet music on the internet.
@Taya - try grabbing modplug ( http://www.modplug.com/ ) and a few of the demo tracks....you can manually de-toggle the channels you don't want to listen to, or solo any specific channel as well. Also, i know that SNES emulators let you save .spc files for playback later, and they also let you turn off channels with F-keys normally (could be a good way to isolate single instruments from SNES game songs you like...not 100% sure what your question is though)

Thanks. I just need something to help me screw around.
I can sorta-kinda read sheet music from when I took piano lessons in the third grade but other than that, I'm not very musical. I found some Tetris piano music to help me practice.
@Taya You could look up some music theory websites for the basics. Something like http://www.musictheory.net/ helps. I'm not particularly good at composition myself (I'm a music appreciator) but I love the accessibility that Rytmik gives me to create music.
Finally bit the bullet and downloaded this. It's pretty easy to pick up after watching the tutorial videos, and very user friendly. Unfortunately I don't own a computer, so I won't be able to share my creations, but given my current ability perhaps that's for the best. Having fun experimenting anyways.

Keep in mind--triggering a new note with almost 0 volume (a few pixels worth) gives it a slightly echoey effect, but still sounds like a cutoff. Might help someone...I thought it sounded kinda cool That combined with some delay provides for copious audio-filthiness.

Almost finished my first song. A "cover" of one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite music games. I only have to figure out the final two measures (they're a bit tricky) and then I'm finished. I'll post it up once it's done (and once I can find my male-male audio cable).
This app is more versatile than I first thought. I'm surprised what you can do with just 128 audio "blocks" and 16 audio channels.

I used that a lot in mine. You can get rid of the cutoff effect by switching to polyphonic mode, and then it becomes a very customisable echo effect.
