Can someone give me their thoughts on the Rune Factory series? I will be looking for a new game to get into soon (I'm currently running through Final Fantasy IV) and I'm not sure about this series. I've never played Harvest Moon games.
Rune Factory is a great series. Really great. I've played both 1 and 2, and they're both fantastic games. They're incredibly slow-paced, however, which is something I enjoy, but definitely not something everyone will. Neither of the stories are particularly engrossing (though a generation shift in 2 is rather clever), but they provide ample motivation to work further into the game.
Considering neither of you have played Harvest Moon, it's harder to make a good comparison for the game's pacing. It unfolds really slowly and the combat actually works very similarly to the farming in that it's methodical, meted out, and anything but compulsive. If you're looking for a dungeon crawler, this ain't it. It's still a great sort of "life-sim" a la Animal Crossing, albeit with more direction. And monsters.
If you're looking to get one, definitely skip straight to 2. 1 is great and all, but many, many improvements to the interface and usability were made in 2, making the first one sort of pointless. Frontier (for the Wii) is really great, too... until the Runey system comes in, which royally ----s everything over. I'd skip it if I were you.
