Shiren the Wanderer is one of the best roguelikes on any system, ever. If you've never played a roguelike, go download NetHack. http://www.nethack.org/ Do it. Seriously.

The Dark Spire is another 20-dollar RPG.It's essentially a spiritual successor of the old Wizardry and The Bard's Tale series. It plays out pretty much exactly the same; create a party of 4 adventurers and set off into a super-tough dungeon. The game is really (as in really really really) long.

Etrian Odyssey 1 & 2 are a lot like The Dark Spire, though arguably easier.

I think the best starting place to get acquainted with roguelikes is... well, Rogue! Very simple and easy to grasp game with surprising depth. I still play it every now and then and notice new things. Once not long ago I actually got to a forest level? I was under the impression you were going downstairs all game, which really puzzled me. I've played it countless times and only once ever got this forest level (and sadly, died before I could see most of it). I really wish I knew what was up with that.

Nethack is good, too, but a bit complicated for my simple tastes. I find most roguelikes hard to play on my laptop since the diagonal keys don't line up right on my keyboard. Also, someone made an excellent roguelike based on Zelda (as well as Castlevania, Metroid, Mega Man and other roguelikes). Can't recommend those enough.

Etrian Odyssey really was awesome. I just wish it wasn't so hard. I know you say it's easier, but I'm just not good at the game. Certain enemies will kill everyone in one or two turns, which can be frustrating. I need to try that Chocobo's Dungeon game on Wii. It'd probably be just right as far as difficulty for me. Or I might just wait and get Shiren the Wanderer when I get a DSi.

Haha, if you thought Etrian Odessy was hard, give The Dark Spire a go.

I'm a fan of Retro RPGs, I'm a fan of hard games. I'm a fan of Nethack and old school Dungeons and Dragons.

The Dark Spire even intimidated me.

Haha, I think I'll give it a pass then.

I just bought Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume on DS for only $19.99 at GameStop. This is a really awesome RPG and I would highly recommend picking it up!

Not very. At all. The time travel mechanic is lousy. Little more than a gimmick. Get GBA Superstar Saga if you can find it. Much, much better.

i was going to get this yesterday, but instead i bought Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World

Adam

Irken, have you played the first Symphonia? I almost picked up Dawn of the New World the other day, but I was afraid it'd make no sense since I never played the original. I think I'm just going to wait for the new Tales game.
