Topic: pros and cons: Tell me why or why not to get a DSiXL next friday

I've finally cleared up my prescription bill (usually around $500 a month) and gotten it more than cut in half, so it's only $200 a month. I get paid next friday and was planning on getting a DSiXL but with the announcement of the 3DS I'm not so sure. Right now I have a DS Phat, but the screens are a bit small and the regular DS and DS light can't get DSiWare. SO here's where you guys come in:

List the pros and cons of the DSiXL and if I should go with it or wait for the 3DS. Next friday I'll tally what you guys say, and that day I'll either make the purchase or not. My DSi experience hinges on you.

To be honest, I wouldn't spend nearly $200 on a new DS. Sure, you get DSiware (which only has a few interesting things) and much better screens, but wouldn't you rather spend that on games or possible save it for the 3DS?

Pros: Bigger screens and i think higher brightness settings.
Cons: Not Travel-Friendly, Glossy Finish which means it leaves finger prints and will most likely fall out of your hands if your hand gets sweaty, Nothing new to it that makes it any diffent from DSi.

I reccomend Waiting for the 3DS but if you really want to experiance DSiWare then i Suggest get the Regular DSi since it's cheaper than a DSiXL. if you get the regular DSi then you will have enough money for a good DS game to play when you run out of nintendo points to spend and get bored of your DSiWare games.

Unless you need the bigger screens, go for a standard DSi. It should be cheaper, too (iirc).

Why: Bigger Screens, DSiWare

Why Not: The 3DS is going to probably be out before the year is it's going to be at E3 (which it is), Better Graphics, most likely DSiWare will be available on the console since Nintendo doesn't want to end something so quickly

Personal Opinion: Wait for the 3DS (unless it's going to be a DS that will be able to output 3D glasses, in which case I don't care which one you choose).

I'd say, unless there are NO other retail games for DS you're interested in that you could spend that money on, just wait (or if you have a Wii, save it for summer's crazy line up).

There's a lot of decent stuff on DSiWare, but you wouldn't want to be stuck if you couldn't transfer it all from your DSi to 3DS next year.

If you don't absolutely need the big screens, I'd try to see if you can pick up a regular DSi used, if you REALLY want DSiWare. It should have been out long enough by now, that you'd be able to find some tradeins or ebay sellers. Then you can save at least some of your cash, and you'll probably get approximately the same amount for either DSi or DSiXL when you trade in for a 3DS.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

Remember, the DSi XL is only glossy on top, so the part you hold onto is still matte finish just like the regular DSi.

@BellGoRiiing Think about it: developers already got the development kit for it, it's going to be playable at E3, Nintendo has to have something for the system up their sleeve, and I specifically remember a big-name person of Nintendo stating that Nintendo doesn't want people to wait very long for Nintendo-made products after they've been announced. It makes sense that it would release near the Holiday season when you add up all the facts.

Got the XL this morning. I had quite a few BestBuy customer-point coupons and gift cards sitting around, so I got the system, Mario Kart and some screen protectors for the grand total of $15.08. I'm loving the big screen. It's not even like portable gaming. Odds are, you'll still be playing standard DS games for several years, so if the big screen is appealing, I would say grab one.

A bit more info now- Our city is having one of the thrice-yearly No Sales Tax weekends starting Friday and my brothers best friend can use his Walmart discount for me (I had completely forgotten about that) so I can get one for about 169 now. Plus, portability isn;t an issue because I don't travel much and when i do, I drive lol (I hate other people's driving) and the only place I'll use it other than home is at my doctors appointments I have once a month.

I'm a collector so i'll get Both DSi XL now and wait till 2011 for the 3DS, so unless you already have a DSi i won't recommended unless your a collector like myself or unless you can't effort it and already have a DSi wait till 3DS, however if you don't have a DSi but DS lite or DS Phat, well it all depends if you want photo dojo, pictobits and flipnote studio since those titles are the highlights of DSi platform.

Update: Since the responses were generally against me getting the XL, being a man of my word I didn't get it. If I still want one a few months down the line and can find a used GBAsp I might get one then, but for now I'm sticking with the Phat i got last month for $10.

As for what I did instead, I bought games and spent about 1/2 of what the XL costs

SOnic and the secret rings- 7.00 at Big Lots
USA Today Crosswords (DS)- 2.00 at Big Lots (both games were on clearance)
New Super Mario Bros (DS)- 19.99 (new Game Xchange)
Advance Wars Days of Ruin (DS)- 4.95 at Game Xchange)
No More Heroes-7.95 at Game Xchange
NPC Pikmin- 14.99 at Best Buy
Barnyard Blast- 7.50 at Best Buy (buy 1 get 1 1/2 off sale for some reason)
Super Mario Galaxy - 49.99 at TRU
Mario & Luigi BIS (DS)- 17.50 at TRU (Another buy 1 get 1 1/2 off sale)

Plus I found my niece the Strawberry Shortcake (her favorite character) GBA game for the GBA she picked out for her 3rd birthday last year, so it's the perfect easter gift for only 3.95 lol

Thanks to everyone who gave their opinions. I still think the XL is awesome and really want one, but you guys did help me make my money last longer this month. I think I'll just put a bit extra back every month and wait til the beginning of Summer to get one.

I hear people comparing it to the Wii in price. Well the Wii cost about $400 in the U.S. bought new, when you add up the cost of games and Wii motion plus.

It does have a better screen, 20$ more is pretty good, it could of cost $225 and you can always wait a couple of months to buy Nintendo points.

Oh yeah at shops like Gamestop, you get more off when you trade the console that came out before.

You should have Got a DSi XL!

It is better then you can imagine. My expectations were surpassed. Screenshots do not do the thing justice, it really is an amazing device. And as I said in the other DSI XL thread, the large stylus is seriously COOL!

I agree, even though I had a original DSi and...you know but I'm happy, the cam is better and the batterie life is longer, I like the larger screens and the color _

@RowdyRodimus: Those were some pretty good deals you snagged. Just played Pikmin in 1 sitting, beat it in 25 days (pikmin time.) I still love that game.

Best thread ever

Of course, you Autobot

Anyway, I'd get a DSi XL for the screens, DSiware, and the music player.

I have a regular DSi but those features I listed are what I use the most.
