I was about to come in here and make a crack about how there was no New Nintendo DS, but then I realized you literally meant a Nintendo DS in new condition. Darn Nintendo and it's god awful console-naming practices...
To answer your question, I play all my limited edition consoles, but a lot of people keep them to display and buy a regular one for regular use. If you're the kind of person who likes to collect Nintendo stuff and show it off in your room, then buy a regular used DS Lite and keep that one sealed. If you don't care about any of that, by all means use it.
