I've finally bought this game & I'm very impressed with it. I think the new ideas are very good, and I like the aspects form the SMB series, SMW, Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story & SM64. There's quite an array of influences, in fact there's even a level that's very similar to one in DKC2.

I'm still in it's thrall, but what do people who bought of this game ages ago think of it game now? I realise that many of you will already have posted about this game, but I'm intrigued to know your thoughts on how well NSMB has aged.

CowLaunch

The minigames against friends never ages. Competing for a highscore or vsing each other is amazing. It has lots of replay vaule.

Metafish

Can you play minigames with others with only one cartridge?

LinktotheFuture

Yes, you only need one cartridge to play minigames with others.

I loved it. It's on the easy side along with Super Mario World, but the style is great and the jumping feels good, if not as good as the old games. I played through it multiple times, my first time to get every gold coin, and my subsequent times just to play through it as fast as possible, sometimes using warp cannons and other times not. I was very glad they kept the game pretty short so that this would be possible, unlike the 3D games where you're going to be playing for probably a week if you want to finish without playing the game all day.

My only complaint about it really is the platform choice. It is difficult to explain why, though maybe it is just nostalgia, but I believe Mario games are meant to be played two-players alternating. After playing through it a few times, it just got dull to do the same thing again and again. I probably wouldn't feel this way if I were sharing the experience with someone else who plays differently than I since I'd be just as entertained competing with each other, trying to advise each other through difficult areas, and most importantly laughing at each other's mistakes.

In fact, while I'm very excited about the next NSMB's simultaneous play, I am hoping against hope that there is a throw-back alternating play mode as an option, too.

Our disputes on the Mario series are already well documented, but this is just another point where it's clear how sharply we differ. I feel like NSMB was indeed somewhat dull to replay compared to other Mario titles, but that, for me, is simply due to the fact that the game's level design was mostly uninspired and far below the standards set by all other games in the series (2D and 3D). There were certainly more than a few memorable levels, and those will always reward replaying, but they're unfortunately surrounded by levels that just don't feel like they hold together in any kind of distinct design or vision, almost as if they were generated randomly from the basic building blocks.

A great Mario game should be engrossing alone, and multiplayer, while a nice addition from time to time, is completely unessential to the core gameplay. If it goes stale on replay, and if the levels run together in your memory instead of feeling like distinct ideas or sketches, it means that it just isn't living up to the high standards of the series.

But my disappointment shouldn't be taken as a recommendation not to purchase it, for anyone who hasn't played it yet. By the standards of any other platforming series, it's more than a solid game with a few very admirable high points. Perhaps I'm looking at it from the wrong angle; none of the handheld Mario titles has shown anywhere near the level of polish of the home versions, due to being developed generally by completely different teams, and this one deserves credit for coming closer to a full Mario experience than all its predecessors.

I quite liked this aspect, it reminded me of SMB3 where every level brought something new, like the goomba show which appears in one level but is never seen again. Admittedly though, that game is probably more coherent and less random.

I didn't feel the giant mushroom really added much to the game, but nor did I feel it really detracted anything from it either(although I hate it in Mario Kart, but that's another discussion).

The control is very tight, and I like the visuals. The level design isn't as good as the original Mario games, though.

@WhoKnew
Same here, I'm looking foward to the Penguin suit & Koopa Kids.

I didn't really like the giant mushroom either, nor did I like the koopa shell thingie. I never really used either. the mini shroom at least offered added challenge (and having to beat the castle with it to get to some worlds was a good idea too), but as for going big, I liked the Super Paper Mario starman (and the way they went retro with it) more than I liked the giant mushroom in NSMB.

Actually, if it's called NSMBros. shouldn't you be able to play as Luigi? (maybe I haven't unlocked that yet?)

CowLaunch

@SSBbrawler08: whoa, I'm not saying I didn't like the game, I'm saying I didn't like those two new powerups. I like the graphics update, I like the addition of the ground pound and stuff, I liked the levels and the gameplay just fine. The only major unignorable that I did not like (the powerups can be ignored or avoided) was the stage select map. I would've preferred something more visually flat, like the stage select maps in SMB3... otherwise, it was a good game and I had fun/will have fun later playing it.

@CowLaunch: According to GameFAQs and Gamespot, if you press L and R at the 'select a file' screen and keep them pressed while you choose one of your saved games with A, you'll play the game as Luigi instead of Mario. I did not know this. I should try it later. :3

When you beat the game (can't remember if it's 100% or just beat it), it tells you the code. I don't know if you have to beat it first for the code to work, but I don't think he controls any differently, so it's not that great of a reward, anyway.

I loved NSMB. Slightly easy, but I tend to enjoy "slightly too easy" more than "slightly too hard." That's just down to personal preference, though. When things are slightly easy, I can look for ways to challenge myself, and I can spend my time searching out secrets. When things are slightly too hard, I need to concentrate more on just staying alive, which does allow me to focus on other, minor goals.

It took me a long time to beat, but that's because I wasn't in any rush to see the ending. I'd put it aside for a few weeks, dig it out, replay old levels, unlock the "hidden" worlds...it's fun. Right now I'm trying to find all the gold coins, which is proving to be more of a challenge than I expected.

I love it. Highly recommended. It's probably my second favorite 2D Mario game. (After SMW.)

Pfft. My ranking for 2D Marios shifts occasionally, but NSMB is near the bottom of the list.

Wow nice! I thought the only thing that could be played 2 player with one cartridge was Mario VS Luigi =D

Super Mario Land 2 is also toward the bottom of your list?! That game was awesome! One of my fondest Game Boy memories!
