We did discuss / debate this matter quite a bit in the comments to the Facebook-update news item here.
I agree that it's a very good move, and although some flash carts out there have various degrees of update-able firmware that might allow them to adapt, there's no question that this will be a huge blow to most of the companies involved, who will have entire lots of flash cards (many of which have already been sent out to retailers in presumably large numbers) suddenly rendered useless.
If Nintendo keeps this up, they can make the business of manufacturing these piracy devices a much more shaky prospect, with a constant threat of your latest model becoming incompatible when you've already started mass producing it.

@Ramandus: since Nintendo can't release firmware updates for the DS and force users to download them, people with DSs have nothing to fear (except not having a DSi in the first place; as to whether that's a problem or not, ymmv).

@mastersworddude: nothing on their own or while being used for purposes of homebrewing, but many people use them for piracy... thus, the hatred.

If only nintendo could somehow make it possible for people to download homebrew games for the DSi. Maybe someone should convince them to accept submissions of games and host them for free on the Shop.
