My new DSi XL has now frozen on me about 8 or 9 times in the day or so that I have been playing it. It almost always happens on the home screen if I leave it idle for anything more than a minute or so, however it just locked up during a game for the 1st time which can't be good.
Has anyone else had this problem?

How do I search for updates? Will it let me know when one is available or do I have to seek it out?
You go to system settings and go to the 4th page of system settngs. then the 3rd button from the top should say system update. do it. (it will always say there's a new update for your system, when there really isn't.) your system update is now complete.
I had the same problem with my DSi! My unit froze while I played Professor Layton and Bookworm(DSiWare). I called Nintendo and they requested that I send it in for repairs. Nintendo couldn't explain why it froze so they sent me another one to replace the frozen unit. My suggestion is to contact Nintendo.
Why would anyone choose to have their DSi freeze? Just wondering.
You are aware Aviator was meaning the Update button might be in the options, right? Not the Make-My-DS-Crash-All-The-Time button. That's under Advanced Settings.

I did the update, not sure if it actually installed an update or just went through the motions but since then it hasn't frozen on the home screen or in game, however it has frozen on the browser since, not sure if that is just because the browser is a bit rubbish though?
Will give it another week and see how I go; I am afraid to use my free 1,000 DSi points in fear of having to send the unit back to Nintendo so making do with a nice bit of Scribblenauts at the moment.

They should be able to transfer your downloads if your system is not working to and in their eyes needs a replacement, so no need to worry.

The browser's pretty crap. Mine crashes pretty much all the time if I load up my gmail or anything more complicated than a basic webpage. If your games or home screen aren't freezing, I wouldn't stress. Also, if you have to send your DSi to Nintendo, they usually will be able to keep your DSiWare on it, and if they have to give you a new one, you can redownload everything from the shop channel.

+1 my XL has frozen several times in the game and while trying to connect to the Wi-Fi point after setup. And after that I tried pressing power button rapidly for reboot and this did not worked, so the only way was to turn it off.
My DSi (not the XL) also froze once playing Chronos Twins for DSiWare, while the music continued playing normally (even when I closed the system) the image froze, and no button would respond including the volume and power buttons (tapping and holding it wouldnt do anyting), I removed the battery (not patient enough to wait for the battery to empty) and set date and time anew. A couple of dates later found and installed a new update (small one, since menu still reads 1.4U, but the flashing of all the update screen squares from left to right makes me assume it WAS an update). Happily it never froze again. Oh! and before that, it froze playing card games a couple of times due to hits or drops, but the power button DID its job those times.
