I love Phantom Hourglass simply because its the first Zelda game I've ever played and that its got everything! Amazing story, charming characters and fun gameplay. Even if today i find this game not as great as I loved it before, I still can say that this is atleast my favourite DS game period!

I can't believe that there's a small fanbase for this game.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

It's definitely one of my favorite DS games. Going around in my little steam boat blowing up stuff... Ahh good times.

It's one of my least favorite Zeldas. I like the concept of a Wind Waker sequel and I think Lineback is a great character, but the touchscreen controls were bad. Why couldn't Nintendo make a game where you control Link using the physical buttons and the touchscreen for navigating menus, etc? It was a relief to me knowing ALBW would be a d-pad controlled game back in 2013.

But the worst aspect of it to me is the Temple of the Ocean King. It's fun the first 2 times you go there, then you have to stealth trough enemies that take one entire heart when they reach you, while solving puzzles and with a time limit on top of all that. But the single most annoying thing is the fact that you have to keep coming there all the time.

This blue eye perceives all things conjoined. The past, the future, and the present. Everything flows and all is connected. This eye is not merely seen reality. It is touching the truth. Open the eye of truth... There is nothing to fear.

It's amazing, definitely underrated. But, I'd say Spirit Tracks is definitely my favorite of the two

I played Phantom Hourglass for a bit after it first came out but only got halfway through before my DS was stolen (with a different game in it though), and thus never played it again for years until now, where I'm starting over and finally intending to play all of it as part of my current quest to actually play every main Zelda game. And yeah, I completely forgot about the touchscreen-only controls, and I'm finding that annoying as all get out. I get that it's the first Zelda for DS and that Nintendo wanted the touchscreen to be an important feature, but couldn't you have still at least given the option to use the analog instead?

I do remember the Temple of the Ocean King and having to re-do it over and over was an annoyance too. Here's hoping it's not as bad as I remembered, and that hopefully I'll get used to the touchscreen controls. I will say that I remember liking Linebeck a lot as a character though, so we'll see how it goes! I've forgotten about so much of my old playthrough that I might as well be playing it for the first time now.

Well you need to remember that there was no Analog Stick on the DS. Also the original DS's D-Pad was pretty bad compared to the DS Lite's or 3DS. The Touch Screen was the best option back then. I was playing Spirit Tracks not too long ago on my 3DS and didn't find it annoying.

Hourglass dungeons killed it for me. Everything else is good. Same thing with spirit tracks and it's flute songs.

Hourglass is by far the single most divisive Zelda game for me. I liked the dungeons, liked the overworld, and the puzzles were really creative and new, being this was the first Zelda with a touchscreen. It also has a pretty solid campaign, too. But, I really have never liked the touch controls. Not even when I was an overly excited nine-year old playing it. Also, the difficulty was really wonky, with the first dungeons being really easy but later getting absolutely brutal. But then again, the fish quests and the whole "Jolene the pirate" thing were really fun and memorable.

I've caught 71 fish and I've not caught anything bigger than a Loovar. :0/

My wallet's almost full and the shops just aren't re-stocking. Masked Beadle disappeared and appeared again and still hadn't re-stocked...then regular Beadle came back and still hadn't re-stocked. :0/

Shops will never restock unless you exit the game and load it again. The WiiU uses restore points, which is why it seems they never restock even though you might exit the game. You need to manually reset it every now and then.

It also uses real time to decide when to restock.

@Meowpheel Thanks, I thought it was based purely on time. I've been checking every hour. I'll try re-booting it and see if makes a difference.

I could probably roll the date forward but I don't really want to. :0/

Edit: Brilliant, thanks, it worked (I'd just been shutting the DS and leaving the game running)...time to do a little shopping.

I know people don't like the Temple of the Ocean King, but I thought it was great. As you gain new items, you can beat each floor in different faster ways. And if you write on the map the order and locations of things, you don't have to memorize them either.

@SuperPaperLuigi you're welcome!
I hadn't noticed it myself until recently when I left the game running for several days on my DS (playing it during that time, of course).

The shops didn't restock, the guy who gives you free stuff stopped doing it... Even Jolene stopped appearing.

@Meowpheel Ugh...Jolene...I need to move the story forward just to get rid of her. :0/

Edit: @Tsurii I love it, it's like a shape-changing dungeon, but in a really good way.

I'm looking to pickup Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Do these games look and play just fine on the 'New' 3DS XL or should I pick up a DSi XL?

I also have to play New Super Mario Bros DS and Yoshi's Island DS, along with the two Zelda games. Those are the only 4 DS titles I want to play.

Thoughts?

@Dreamliner do you have a Wii U? Almost all of those are on Wii U Virtual Console

@DefHalan I do have a Wii-U. I think I have a Yoshi Island game for it I got free, played it a bit and thought it looked fine but I'm not a huge fan of downloads though.

I already own Yoshi and Mario Bros DS.

@Meowpheel I tried Mario Bros DS on the 3DS in the big mode and also the 1:1 pixel mode. Both looked a bit blurry but that might just be a DS resolution thing.

Dreamliner

Eel

They shouldn't look blurry at all on the 1:1 mode. Small, maybe, but blurry not.

On the XL, when in 1:1 they look about the same size as on a normal DSi.

2D games tend to look worse on the 3ds when stretched out. But with polygonal games like the Zelda games, it's less bad.

@Meowpheel I guess I don't necessarily mean blurry, just as compared to a 3DS title it looks less clear.

When in 1:1 mode I still don't think NSMBDS looks as sharp as NSMB2.

I plan to play the physical carts of the DS games and if it's worth the $70 to pick up a used DSi XL I will, but if it doesn't really look better then nah.
