Ubisoft announced a sequel to Jam Session on its website. I'm mildly interested to see how this turns out. Did anyone here try the original? It had some serious flaws and wasn't exactly the most robust musical experience you can get, but I got it for only $5 and ended up getting some use out of it while on a roadtrip, plugging it into the car's sound system and then frantically customizing the chord charts to be able to strum some sing-alongs of various tunes as they came to mind (ones where I could remember the entire chord structure quickly enough to set it up, and then there's the little issue of some chord types not really being included in the game, so you have to pick something with a parallel function).

Anyhow, the sequel promises these new features:

  • Fun music challenges in Gameplay mode: Play through a diverse array of licensed songs to build levels. Each challenge is unique – players are not merely going faster they are developing and reinforcing the skills necessary to fine tune their electric guitar skills and write songs.
  • Learn & Play with diverse guitar driven bands like: REM, Heart, The Ramones, The Clash, Doobie Brothers, Plain White-T’s, The Black Crowes, The Pixies and more!
  • Immersive Experience: A 6 string interface, a streaming note chart, hundreds of guitar chords and sounds make for an authentic electric guitar experience. Choose to learn on any of the following electric guitars - Stratocaster, Telecaster, Acoustic, Old Electric & Les Paul.
  • User created content: Players can freestyle sections of featured band’s songs and make them their own. With a push of a button, players’ created works can be added to the game’s set list and instantly converted into a playable level.
  • Express creativity: Personalized artist’s profiles can be created and customized to track all achievements. Players can select their album cover and launch their debut album.
  • A community of budding musicians: Improvisations and creations can be shared with players’ songs pushed into gameplay mode along side songs of famous artists.
  • Song Creation Tools: Contains powerful multi-track song editing software that makes producing high quality music easy, intuitive and fun. Create a song and have your friends play it through song sharing!

But, of particular interest to me, is this vague statement (for which we'll hopefully get some details soon):
Contains DSi features to enhance sound effects while playing.

What do you think?

I'll add that the more I look at it, the fact that the sequel is focusing on electric guitars, as well as this strange promise of a "6 string interface" and a "streaming note chart" does not sound particularly promising. The last thing it should do is inch closer to Guitar Hero. I'm still interested in seeing what they do with it, but I have reservations.

I played the first one to death. Hopefully this one will be as simple to use.

I liked the first one a lot, but if you don't know how to play the guitar in real life it's quite a learning curve. Hopefully you can record longer jam sessions because before they could only be like a minute long! I also hope you can record your voice.

Oh, and by "user created content" do they mean that you can share your songs online? Because that'd be pretty cool! I'll have to keep an eye on this, because the first one was pretty cool.

I think they're just trying to give the game some legs. The "career mode" in the first one was pretty shallow, but as long as they expand free-play mode while keeping it accessable I don't see the problem. And if "6 String Interface" means that you can pay individual notes in addition to chords that would be a huge step up from the first game IMO.
