I was pretty much right. I won't even get into the hypocricy of complaining about a terrible opening in a JRPG.
No you weren't. I'm sure you won't get into the hypocrisy of complaining about terrible openings in JRPGs, because there is no reason why they should have a terrible opening. If it isn't great from the get-go, it's severely outclassed by many other RPGs, regardless of how it gets later on.
I liked the reviews, the reviewers found flaws, and exposed them. I'm quite glad they didn't ignore the flaws since it's a highly anticipated Nintendo game! Don't worry though the reviewers here are more lax, a 9 is completely likely, a 10 wouldn't be surprising!

Then why is Final Fantasy so popular with their long, drawn-out, five-hour long openings

The same reason why people put up with it in Golden Sun: It's not a problem for everyone. In fact, I've played enough RPGs that I've actually come to expect the beginning to be slow. Granted, I still find it rather painful in Golden Sun, where it takes an hour to get to your first fight, and there's no plot until you beat the first dungeon 3 hours in, so I'd say it's still worth complaining if Dark Dawn follows that same formula. At least Final Fantasy hints at a plot or has a fake plot that's tossed aside so it doesn't feel like you've done nothing for 5 hours.
Got the game. Music so far isn't as awesome (so I guess it breaks the "every series has better music on DS compared to GBA" rule with MandL?) And the exposition for the first half hour is laughably bad. But it's pretty great otherwise and the Psynergy Training area ruled and I'm surprisingly not hating a "this takes place in the future to explain why no areas in this world are like they were in the past" story.

The best music is in the second half of the game in my opinion

I'm currently playing through this game and enjoying it greatly so far.
What I do not like, though, is the fact that it doesn't really improve or expand upon the two other games. Other than the fact that you can assign spells to your shoulder buttons there isn't anything that wasn't in the previous titles.
Albeit traditional, this game is addictive as hell.

Too be honest it's kinda hard to branch out from a popular and winning formula that the last two established. It's kinda like Zelda and Mario. Maybe the next one will introduce some new features

Actually I know for a fact you could assign spells to the shoulder buttons in the original games. Because I had an obsession with using mind read on everyone.

Really? You're probably right. I do not recall that from the first game but I haven't played it in a while.
What I hate though is that you're not capable of returning to certain areas visited before after certain events, thus making it impossible to collect all the Djinn and all the summons without restarting the game. Even after beating the main quest, it seems impossible.
I hate how they brought back random Overworld battle Djinns. That was always a horrible idea and forces me to look at walkthroughs so I don't accidently miss too many of one type of Djinn.
@Nightwalker: don't worry, they'll beat you over the head repeatedly with everything that's ever happened in the history of Weyard, so you won't have missed much. there's also the helpful Encyclopedia entries you can pick up in every conversation that'll help to give backstory to unfamiliar terminology. :3

more like 'Have We Lost Kraden Yet?'... that old guy is so irritating once you find him. i kept wanting someone to punch him in the face and leave him on some deserted island so my party could go on and have an adventure without him tagging along explaining everything :/
