After reading Corbie's impressions and watching some gameplay footage on YouTube, this is quickly becoming one of my most-wanted games of this year. The battle system looks quick and is fun to look at, and the dungeons look nicely paced.
Here's some gameplay footage to whet your appetite. [youtube:UZsh_Wp8kbc]
I've been drooling over this game since it was announced for a Japanese release years ago, and have been following it ever since. It looks exactly like the kind of game I've been looking for, and I can't wait to play it! I already got it pre-ordered, now all that's left is for me to wait.
Man that video just makes me want to play it again even more. This is going to be a long wait until October 5th. I might have to inquire about a preview build of this one.
@Mickeymac: Yeah, I've had it on my radar ever since I heard about it last summer. I wasn't sold on it until I saw some actual gameplay footage with full audio (to be honest, I think the trailer they put out kind of sucks). I'm totally stoked for it now though!
@Corbie: And you can send that build to my address.

Yeah, I actually found out about it by looking at your wishlist on the Backloggery (I can't remember why I was looking at it, though )
Just took a closer look at the video, and did anyone else notice the orb thingies? Each party member has 5, and they regenerate by one every turn. Different attacks (including magic) require a certain number of orbs. This sounds kind of awesome to me. MP always did annoy me in RPGs, and this seems to be a nice alternative.

Ah, I do like that much more. Sounds more strategic, but in a basic, easy-to-understand way -- not exactly what Final Fantasy is known for nowadays.
I'm not a fan of MP, either. Fire Emblem Gaiden had a neat, streamlined approach to magic, simply draining your HP to cast spells.
I imagine they'll have [rare] items that will fully replenish your orbs, too. If only the battles weren't random, like DQ9. At least the visuals make up for it. I think DQ9 looks rather bland compared to this, quite honestly.

Ugh, that sounds terrible.
It's not that bad, actually. Considering the fact there are points you can go to to heal, and as well as spells to drain HP from your enemies, it usually works out pretty well in that game. I'm sure it wouldn't be as practical in a regular RPG, though.
Why? It makes everything simpler, and it makes the decision to use spells much more interesting.
If you want to try it yourself, there is a game that tried sapping your health for spells. I think it was some poorly recieved Super NES game, so if nothing else it should be cheap. I'll try to find the name in a mo.
