Topic: Explorers of Sky is a 4.9...

That's... really not helpful.

I hate to bring up the rant about how utterly pointless game scores are, but "4.9" tells me absolutely nothing. What's the game like? How does it play?

I read through the review and it sounds really damned good to me.

I really want to stress that scores are pointless. If you like roguelikes, or the idea of roguelikes, and you'd not played a Mystery Dungeon game before, than chances are you'll love this.

@WaltzElf: there's a full textual review behind the link Odnetnin posted that looks fairly comprehensive to me. If the reviewer felt the need to give it a 4.9 even after all that, it can't have been without reason.

I'm just objecting to Odnetnin's use of the "4.9" as the only piece of information, as though it's the most important bit of the review.

If you put imaginary block on the 4.9 score, it's quite clear from the review that there's an audience there that would really quite enjoy this one.

I just can't recommend explorers of Sky to anyone that has played the previous games. Hell, I don't recommend it even if you've never played Explorers of Darkness/Time. The game looks like a GBA game, and is chock full of lazy, dated gameplay. ChunSoft is a talented developer, but it'd be nice if it didn't keep making 15-year-old game designs. It feels like the only reason this game has a third version (or a second version for that matter), is because Nintendo knows kids expect it, and will snatch it up. It's a rip off, plain and simple.

even without the score, i'm not seeing anything about an audience (other than the little kids that are expecting a new Pokemon game, maybe) that would appreciate this game from the text of the review... o_O

Well, I know I'll be picking this one up. I played the first one, and loved it. So, it doesn't matter to me what it scored. I will be getting it.
I must state, however; that I am anticipating the release of Mystery Dungeon on Wiiware. I do hope that makes it to America.

See, I read Roguelike. Reviewers don't tend to receive those games very well, and fair enough, they are very (very) niche. But they're also quite compelling that niche.

It's like the Dark Spire - a complete love-it-or-hate-it deal.

I agree with IGN about the Mystery Dungeon games (Based on the ones released).Gameplay wise, If you've played one you've played them all. However if you play it for the story as well as the gameplay then you shouldn't be disappointed.

@WaltzElf: and I read that they completely ripped off the plot from the previous game(s) and didn't bother to update the gameplay or graphics at all. The prior PMD games earned 6.5s, as Red and Blue Rescue Team were both being compared to other ChunSoft roguelikes, and then Time/Darkness was being compared to the prior games... perhaps the IGN reviewers are just sick of seeing more of the same in the series after having played through them all? idk. :3

Wow, the first one's really scored that low? o_O Well, I know I don't see eye-to-eye with that reviewer. I really enjoyed the first PMD.

Believe or not, a lot of people just care about a game's score. While it is far from the most comprehensive thing to say about the game, it is the thing that will most likely catch one's eye (people like you excepted).

Which is why I would love game scores to disappear For people's own good they need to realise how weak game scores are at measuring the quality of a game.

So... just like Pokemon, then?

I think a lot of people like playing each new version of Pokemon.

Rensch

I played the first Mystery dungeon game once but I didn't like it.

The main RPG series are awesome though.
