According to the Official site, it's coming out on September 21st, 2010. Pre-orders on various sites should start popping up soon. I'm so excited for it! I'll be buying it day one, that's for sure! I missed out on the first two games, and Dark Spire - I'm not missing out on this!
The first two were absurdly hard, and Dark Spire was somehow much harder. I'm interested in this though because I like Etrian Odyssey's style, and I heard there's some sort of multiplayer in this one. Beats me how that'd work. No mention of it on the official site. I hope they've eased the difficulty down to human levels or at least offer different difficulty levels.

Difficulty levels would be nice, though I doubt I would mind the difficulty that much. It's supposed to harken back to Wizardry, which is quite simply the hardest game I've ever played, yet it was very satisfying once I finally worked my way around its quirks.
Though, if you're looking for an Etrian Odyssey-type game that's not too hard, you should try Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. It's a lot like EO and DS, but with a far deeper storyline and a much more manageable difficulty.
Oh yeah, and did you ever sell your copy of Dark Spire?
Yea, traded it with someone here. Digiki, I think. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll definitely look into that. Currently DS-less, but resisting the 3DS will be difficult, so I might catch up on stuff like this, FF 4 Heroes of Light, and (hopefully) the new Fire Emblem then.
@Yasume: From what I've read the Etrian Odyssey that is coming to the 3DS should be an entirely new game.
I am very eagerly awaiting this game. I loved the first two Etrian Odyssey games. Tough as nails but they are so addictive. The first time I played the original Etrian Odyssey I did not like it at all. I was actually considering trading it in but I decided to give it another chance and it really grew on me. It is now one of my all time favorite video game franchises. I'm really grateful to Atlus for continuing to bring these awesome games to the US.
Oh and I agree with Mickeymac, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is fantastic and perfect for fans of the Etrian Odyssey games. I also own The Dark Spire but I still have not completed it. That game is so unbelievably tough that it's not even funny.
@Mickeymac: Oh I totally agree with you and I'm very glad to see this game doing so well. I'm pretty sure that this really cool artbook helped put it in the top sales spot today as well. I'm definitely going to pre-order my copy so I don't miss out.
I'm pre-ordering my copy as soon as I have a spare moment. I own both 1 and 2, (both of which I needed to get from Ebay considering their incredibly rarity) as well as multiple copies of The Dark Spire. The funniest part is, I've never even played Wizardry! I just happen to really, really love this sort of tougher-than-nails dungeon crawling.
I love this series 'cause it's an homage to that style of games without falling into the pitfalls of unplayable awfulness that the actual games of that style from the 80's suffered. I've tried Wizardry, various D&D games, and whatnot on NES...they're all HORRIBLE! Etrian Odyssey, however, is awesome. I'll be reserving this just to be sure I get a copy as well, even though I'm horribly behind in playing what I've got.
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P

They're not horrible, IMO. They're just unfriendly and unforgiving. You had to learn the game entirely on your own, and it wasn't gonna do anything to make things easier. All games back then were like that. Etrian Odyssey does little things to help you out that those older games didn't do, and the game is more straight-forward and more balanced. They aren't horrible. They're just old.
Etrian Odessy really isn't as similar to Wizardry as people like to claim it is. Thematically, it's different, it's a brighter, more cheerful game than the very dark Wizardry systems, and the character/ level up system is closer to a JRPG.
The Dark Spire could well be a Wizardry game. That's why I tend to prefer it. I like my JRPGs more forgiving, and I like my retro-style RPGs as hard as can be.
Plus, in Dark Spire you can play the game using wireframe graphics and 8-bit music. That's just all kinds of awesome.

This is also why I enjoyed The Dark Spire. But I hesitate to say that EO's level progression was JRPG-esque... it was essentially a rather surprisingly in-depth skill tree, which is not something I normally expect in a JRPG.
That being said, however, The Dark Spire undeniably had a leveling system so similar, it was basically Wizardry 10. The Classic Mode was also incredibly awesome. And it had the best music EVER.
I'm also a huge roguelike fanatic, so I tend to prefer my games to be punishing. Not impossible, mind you, but punishing.

That's kind of why I prefer Etrian Odyssey, really. I honestly don't give a woot about stats and junk, so I prefer it when the game handles the levelling for me. Because G-d knows, I'll just assign those points randomly, and in ways that are really unhelpful, like that time I put all my points into INT because I wanted my fighter to be really smart.
Oh yeah, and I didn't like the game's style, either. The 8-bit mode was a nice touch, but the actual graphics that they worked so hard on just didn't do anything for me.
