Topic: DS/Wii Connectivity

Hi all. I was wondering if you could help me identify all the games that take advantage of a DS/Wii connectivity. I'm new to the DS, but I remember playing Zelda: Four Swords on the gamecube with everyone having their own GBA for their own personal item screen and things like that. Are there any good games out there taking advantage of that connection with Wii and DS? The more synergy the better I say, but I'm not having much luck finding games that do this. Why do you suppose this combo technology didn't take off?

I would enjoy using my DS as a remote for the Wii even if I were by myself. And everyone using their own DS with the TV would also solve issues with board games (settlers of catan comes to mind) where your opponents aren't supposed to be able to see your cards.
I still see a lot of possibility there, what do you guys think? Is there something out there I'm missing out on?

The only DS-Wii connectivity I knew is about downloading demon, rating DS games, and Batman: the Brave and the Bold.

DS-wii connectivity wasn't as good as it could of been. The only games I know that use it were the ones hulklol said and Pokemon.

I am not sure if there are any games like that for the DS/Wii. The only game I played like that was Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on GC where each player used a GBSP for there stat screen and such.

thanks for mentioning Batman, I hadn't heard of that. Too bad it looks like you gotta buy both versions of the game to take advantage of it...
How does that connectivity with Pokemon work? any good?
I'm hoping the technology catches on, maybe with the 3DS. I like using my stuff together. I get a kick out of something as simple as rating my DS games wirelessly on the Wii. Synergy like that seems like one of the reasons a company like Apple is so successful. Let me use my stuff together! How about a Dragon Quest IX on the TV that does split screen if you separate. Everyone has a DS as a remote and their own personal item screen.

Band Hero and probably some more in the Guitar Hero family. Never tried it though.

I'm totally down with receiving demons through my Wii's internet connection. We all know Nintendo went to the dark side and sold their souls - that's why they got such high sales this generation.

But seriously, there's also the "secret" Mii transfer to DS option in the Mii Channel which is used by some DS games.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time is the same game on the DS and Wii and you can play multiplayer cross-platform. The main issue was that the game was primarily a DS game and looked the same(only higher res) on the Wii.... but it could be cool to try the concept on 3DS and Wii again.

I think the reason the 4 swords tech didn't take off in more games is because of the expense. You needed 4 people, 4 gameboy advances, and 4 gba-gcn link cables to take full advantage of the game. How many people had/could afford all of those things for one game? I never got it, because my bro and I shared a GBA, so I don't think we could have played it (though I wanted too). That's why the dreamcast was so brilliant in putting little screens on their memory cards in the controllers. So much wasted potential sigh.

/dreamcast fangirl rant over.

The only really useful feature is demos for the DS that you can download off the Nintendo Channel. You can also rate DS games there. Other than that, the only thing I've used it for is to receive messages when a pokemon trade goes through on GTS. That's nice, but normally if I'm trading on GTS, I'm also playing pokemon fairly regularly, so it doesn't matter too much. Hopefully the 3DS will offer more, like Mii transfers and such.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

You're definitely right about the expense issue. It would probably be bad business to make a game and exclude everyone who doesn't own a Wii and a DS and have friends with a DS to boot. But if they could make it an option for gameplay then it might make a lot of people happy, even if it's just a cosmetic bonus like having your own little map in your hands always open, and it might even convince some people to get a DS of their own. Adding a little more connectivity for the 3DS and Wii might give people yet another reason they have to pick one up come March.

What a great topic.

If you can believe it, the announcement of 4 Swords Adventures is what compelled me to jump back into console gaming. I thought that the idea was just so fresh and full of potential. Unfortunately, it seems that the concept was far ahead of its time.

I thought that the wireless capabilities of the Wii and the DS meant that we would be assured a fresh stream of connected games, but I was wrong. I think that it has a lot to do with the installed base. Games makers know that everyone with a Wii also has a nunchuck and a wiimote. They know that making requirements above and beyond this could cost them a sale. Therefore, we see low numbers of games that require additional hardware.

I had a great Wiiware idea for a fun party game: Password. If you recall, Password has clue givers and guessers. The givers have a small handheld device that keeps the clue a secret to everyone else.

With a DS or a GBA + GC--> GBA cable, the clue givers would have a private display. Better yet would be to have 2 DS's or GBA's or a mixture. Now each clue giver would have their own display just like the original show.

I firmly believe that this would make an excellent title, that would bring players together socially through the technology.

Like I said: Great topic. heh
