It's always easier to break / hack something than to be the one trying to stop that. Nonetheless, I'm sure the update has served its purpose pretty well. Many of those currently pirating don't have updatable cards, and there's still the open question of whether all the updatable ones will even be capable of getting past this. What's more -- they're also trying to combat the piracy that comes in the form of fake individual retail games, which are sold in unbelievable numbers on eBay etc. The DSi has always blocked the vast majority of those, but I'm betting a whole host of additional lots of those mass produced fakes have been rendered useless now.
This process also turns off the more casual pirates, who don't know much about tech or firmware etc but who just picked up a flashcart and then found out one day that it no longer works. There are surely a whole lot of people in that situation, as these devices have been sold in mass numbers in certain areas, to all kinds of consumers who don't have a clue how it all works.

So really, this isn't a major fix, all it shows is that it can be used on 1.4. I personally support flash carts, so I hope they do find a fix.

Well, how does this affect the average consumer? Higher game prices, or...? I guess I'm not seeing the downside here...
