Topic: DSi Surface Texture

Can some of you DSi owners allay my fears? I hear that the DSi has a "rough" texture vs the smooth gloss of the light. When I hear this I can't help but think it has that gross "sandpaper" feel...kind of like the feeling you get when running fingernails across a chalkboard. I'm sure that is not the case, but can some of the DSi owners hear comment about how the new texture feels?

Personally I'm quite fond of it. It's not like sandpaper, it's just textured enough to have a nice grip and not feel anything like plastic. I can't think of any similar surface for comparison, but generally speaking I'd say that it feels much less cheap than glossy plastic.

Not to insult the Lite or anything (or my white MacBook for that matter, which has an identical exterior to my old Lite), but it seems that these things trend rather quickly, and the old glossy emphasis is being replaced in many devices by a more matte look. Nintendo seems to closely parallel Apple's changes in design, and of course Apple has switched from the gloss to a brushed aluminum exterior.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

it's not so much a 'rough' texture as it is 'frosted'... if you've ever had a plastic cup with a frosted design, that's pretty much what it feels like to me.

That makes sense...sounds very nice. I still think I will wait to see if their are either A) any must have DSiWare games or B) any must have DSi exclusive games before I pick one up...but I'm pretty sure we will eventually. We have two DS Lites, but four DS players in the house...so we are often short on systems to go around when on trips, etc.

I'd describe it as a slate or "cold stone" texture. While I don't think it looks quite as nice as the glossy finish of the DS Lite, it has several advantages. Grip and lack of fingerprints are the obvious ones. The one other I'd add is thermal regulation. Those glossy finishes seem to be heat traps. This finish feels cooler to the touch, helping prevent the dreaded Sweaty Hand Syndrome(TM).

It's interesting, you mentioned this because I was just thinking about that. When I first opened the DSi I didn't like the texture at all. Like Theblackdragon said, it feels a bit like a frosted glass. But I noticed that after a few days it wasn't so rough anymore. Now it makes me think that it almost felt a bit dirty, which seems strange considering the environment where electronics are made. But it really isn't as scratchy feeling as it was brand new out-of-the-box. It's almost as if my hands have brushed off whatever was making it feel scratchy, and now it's fine.

After having a feel of my DSi, a co-worker said this one feels more substational than her DS-lite does. Like it feels like it's made of a stronger material and the DS-lite feels more plastic-ie. (I've never held a DS-lite, so I don't know.)

The black and blue which are the original dsi consoles are matte black and matte blue. the newest ones, the pink and white are smooth, not glossy, but are not as rough as the matte black and blue. my brother has the black and i have the pink so i would know believe me i was asking everyone too.

I love the rougher texture and it makes it easier to hold onto for me. I have not held the white or pink models yet, however.

It feels JUST LIKE Sandpaper, but the good thing is you can rub your fingernails against it and it files your nails. Because of its rough texture, its also good for exfoliating (face or feet). If you need to light a match, just strike it against it.

Matte finish in my opinion is a greater improvement to the DS lite than a camera.

I'll never be able to go back to a fingerprint magnet gloss finish again.

By smooth gloss don't you mean "Waxy melted silicone pellets"?

The texture reminds me of frosted glass. I remember in the beginning thinking that it not only felt scratchy, or a bit gritty. At first I didn't really like it. I was thinking it was going to feel more rubbery - kind of like the way the buttons on some TV remotes feel. So I was disappointed with the frosted glass feel. But I soon got used to it and I don't even notice it at all anymore. The gritty-ness is gone as well, almost as if it's worn off, though I can see no signs of it wear. (There's no smooth marks from my hands and it does feel OK now.)

I've got the matte black DSi, and I wouldn't describe it as feeling like sandpaper at all. It's very comfortable to rub your fingers over it and I see no visible roughness to it at all, yet it is much easier to grip than the DS Lite. On the DS Lite my fingers slide all over it, and it always feels greasy and sweaty, but my hands always feel clean and dry holding the DSi. I'm really happy that the DSi doesn't show fingerprints all over it -- looks a million times better than my jet black DS Lite.
