OK, who else has managed to re-encode their MP3/WMAs into AAC to play music on their DSi?
I'm not sure if its the way I re-encoded my music collection, but I am rather disapointed with the sound quality of my AAC files. I was wondering if this reduced sound quality is a general problem with MP3 to AAC conversion (or the DSi). The result is somewhat tinny (with a buzzing distortion) whether I play it on the DSi speakers, on headphones or plugged through a sound system. I really hope that they decide to allow us to play our better quality MP3s on the DSi in some future 'System Update'. But then that is probably just wishful thinking. I'd be interested to know what your experiences have been of playing music on your DSi?
you can change the bitrate for encoding your AAC files just like you can for MP3s; perhaps you could try re-encoding at a higher bitrate?

Hmm, OK. I guess it could be to to with the software I used, some free 3rd party app called MediaCoder. It did allow me to change the bitrate, which I set to maximum (i.e. 48 KBps, that is 48000 Hz) but the difference was minimal. I will try what you did ReZon and use iTunes. Thanks for the help.

48Kbps? That's not very high. Try using iTunes. If you go into the preferences, you can set the output encoding to AAC. Then highlight the files you want to transcode, right click, select "Create AAC Files" and wait.
When the transcoding is done, simply drag the files from the iTunes interface into a Windows Explorer window showing your SD Card drive.
I use iTunes and it's fine - in fact, AAC tracks tend to be better quality than your average MP3 file, even though converting an MP3 into AAC obviously won't improve the sound in any way.
Thanks for the advice. I am using iTunes to convert my MP3s, however I am quite shocked because the file sizes have now greatly increased! For example a 4.6MB MP3 has now become a 9.3MB M4A file. How can that be right?!! Oooer!
KitBliss I think you 've made a mistake. I 've just checked my AAC converted files and the MP3 unconverted files, ande the second ones are the biggest ones. For example One file in ACCC for the DSi it's about 2MB and the original was about 6,4. :S

it could be that iTunes default bitrate is larger than that of your original MP3s... re-encoding a 128kbps MP3 file at 256kbps, for example, would make the file larger (even though it wouldn't do anything to the sound quality; it would still sound like the original file).

So I also checked what bitrate I was using I it resulted I encoded the files at 96 kbps and 44100 KHz. Does this make the converted file one with less quality?
Oh yes, for some reason the default bitrate was set to 256kbps, I've changed it and now my AACs are coming out about the same size as MP3s now (although a little bigger!) Can't believe I missed that. Thanks again!
sence i deleted all the music on my computer off my hard drive i had to plug in my coby mp3 player then go shopping for music converters on the internet. until i relized how stupid i was being and just copyed my music file from my mp3 player to itunes and then got it converted to aac format it took about 1half hour but then i copyed the file over to my sd card then deleted it from my computer and i was useing windows exsplorer to move the files back and forth oh boy was that a hastle
This is ground control to major Tom, you've really made the grade. And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare

96 kbps is radio quality; there's a distinct hiss in the background and some warbling/distortion going on. 128 is standard (or good enough to sound right, lol), and 256 is near-CD quality.
you can re-encode a file at a higher bitrate to a lower bitrate with no problem, but attempting to re-encode a file at a lower bitrate to a higher bitrate will do nothing with regard to sound quality. It's like attempting to save a jpeg as a bitmap file; the compression damage has already been done.

You will need to encode to .m4a, .m4b or .m4p. You should use CDEX and use the LAME encoder. Rip your CD's to .wav files which is the highest data and quality your can use, uncompressed. Then convert to the above mentioned formats. The DSi will not see .aac files. But I used .m4a and worked great. Nintendo uses higher quality audio than mp3, it uses bascially MP4...Hope it helps...

why not download format factory? http://www.formatoz.com/dl.html go for 1.90 convert the audio to m4a and its done trust me I use this software all the time works beautifully
@armoredghor: that's really cool. the program in question is $6, though; it kinda sucks if you're unable to use iTunes for free, lol

Yeah. I couldn't get itunes to work so I searched around for about 3-4 days straight for a decent converter but could only trial versions (some lasting 60 seconds) and $25 full versions. 6 months later I found their new official one.
geez, six bucks versus twenty-five... nice. have you tried it yet? does it work well?
