Topic: Cave Story DSiWare, aka the best thing to happen to the DSi

I knew NA would manage to get DSiWare Cave story before the rest of the world got the wiiware version.

Hmmm....I'm confused. I thought Cave Story would be out before Thanksgiving Day but now according to various things I've read on google it seems Cave Story will be available this upcoming Monday. Is that correct folks?

Yes, Mickeymac! I'm excited. According to Nicalis Twitter feed it is true that Cave Story DSi will be released on the 29th of November. I'm really looking forward to playing Cave Story for the first time in my life. BTW is it true that there is a free download-able version of Cave Story for the PC?

@TokyoRed It's true. Link 1 gets you the game, and link 2 gets you the patch to make it English, in case you're some weird American who doesn't speak Japanese. I would hold off for the DSiWare version during its honeymoon period, at least. Experiencing the best version first is the way go even it actually costs money, imo.

Color me excited for Monday, when I will hopefully be downloading this, Tetris, Ivy the Kiwi, and some decent 200-pointer.* 10 Second Run maybe. I know I'll be hitting up the DSiWare recommendations thread soon to maximize all of the portable goodness headed my way!

Just got the game. After an hour of gameplay here is what I have to say: The graphics are identical(aside from some missing resolution) to the original freeware game and so far, no slow downs or any forms of glitches. This is by far the best looking dsiware game(though thats not saying much). The music while a bit off IMO seems to emulate the original's well and its OST is really good to begin with (if you love retro bits). The gameplay plays well and there seems to be no form of awkwardness, lags or clunkiness when you control your character. From the physics to the weapons, everything is crafted well. This is what makes a great platformer imo.
Here are my gripes as of now: When I DLed the game I was amazed at how Niscalis managed to fit the entire game to just 45-47 blocks and at the same time dumb-founded that it could have been better off priced lower. I felt really ripped off but I got it anyway since I loved the freeware CS and had no other way to play it (broken keys).
If you are in the mood to play some metroid style gameplay and have enjoyed shantae, then by all means buy it.

@Karakato: Thanks fot those impressions! I have a few question though and would appreciate your opinions very much. You made reference at the end to Shantae, my most loved DSiWare game. How would you rate this game in relation to Shantae? Like, how similar are they gameplay wise? Which one do you feel is better overall? Also, since this CS is the same game as on PC and you've played that, how long of a game is CS minus any extra stuff?

Does the DSiWare version not have all the features of the WiiWare one? It's just a straight up port of the PC version?

The game does NOT have the updated graphics and sound that the WiiWare version has. It's cheaper and portable, though, which seems fair to me.

Somebody asked how the game stacks up against Shantae; Cave Story is unquestionably a better game, and is considered by many to be one of the greatest games of all time. Shantae is a great game, but in my opinion, Cave Story reaches Ocarina of Time levels of quality. You simply can't buy a better game for $10 (except OoT of course )

^ Ooh, Oot quality? I was expecting better from this game. I was always more of an overhead Zelda guy, myself.

Joking aside, while the DSiWare version doesn't have the updated graphics and sound, it still retains all of the features of the PC and WiiWare versions, correct? Like Curly and Boss Rush Mode? If so, I'm downloading this pronto. I loved it on the PC, but as a console gamer, I've always preferred leaving the PC for the WRPGs. I just felt like the game's full potential wasn't there, being restricted to a PC keyboard (or controller).

It's way better than OoT quality, imo, considering I hate that game.

@bboy2970 - To answer your questions:

• From what I played in the PC ver. I have to say that CS is leagues ahead of Shantae. Not to say Shantae was bad, but it was on the short side, that and CS is one of the best platformers I've ever played (Up there with Mario and Castlevania).
• Cs and Shantae both seem reminiscent of metroid featuring both action and exploration, and thats all they have in common _{I think} .
• I played the original years ago, but from what I remember, I think I spent around 10 or so hours (including multiple deaths...)

When I started up CS, I noticed some locked content on the menu, probably the wiiware content. But thats my hunch. So far, I can safely say that this is the best platformer on dsiware so far even though it was released on other systems (one being free) and would recommend it to anyone who's interested in some retro action.

I feel the opposite, actually. I find Shantae to be one of the best (and definitely best-looking) platformers I've ever played, while I find Cave Story to be a bit less spectacular. It's fantastic, to be sure, but I feel like it received attention largely because it proved that small, independent games could be something special, and not that it was a mastery of the form.

Then again, I also feel Ocarina of Time was an overall inferior game to Twilight Princess and that people have their nostalgia glasses on way too tight, so I'm definitely in the minority.

Twilight princess doesn't hold a candle to OOT.

I've played a total of two mins and can already tell this game will blow away shantae. Shantas graphics are great but cave story is so fast paste that it looks like metriod on steroids!

See for me, Cave Story is great because it is a complete mastery of the form. The indie-dev thing is a bonus, I guess, but now you can play it on PC, Wii and DSi and it's making good money, and the game isn't any less spectacular.

I'll agree with you with TP being better than OoT, though. Both are great, obviously, but Twilight Princess truly is a masterful follow-up that surpasses Ocarina in every category.
