@rosebud - Read the interview. Sounds like Nicalis is taking this very seriously and it should definitely be awesome. I am officially hyped for this.

Exactly.

@Birdman13: Yeah, I thought it was very informative. It is on my official wishlist as well even though I have not played the PC version. I also liked the thinly veiled swipes at certain third-party publishers who retool mobile phone games for DSiWare. Anyway, it was great read and really sold me on the concept of Cave Story.

For the DSiWare version, we kept it relatively lean in comparison mainly because this is more a perfect port of the original game. We did include a few things from the WiiWare version but not all of them.

The idea of scaling down the artwork was thrown out almost instantly, as all of Pixel’s artwork is pretty iconic. We had no intention of ruining it by scaling down. That left one obvious option: crop the screen.

Proof that if you have the WiiWare version, you don't need the DSiWare version. I'd still suggest getting this only if you don't have the WiiWare version or the portable aspect of it is important to you.

This would make me very happy. Any excuse to play more Cave Story is a good excuse!

What was strange in my Copy of Cave Story Wiiware was,
Spoilers
The tow rope in the water chamber wasnt there. I spent 10 minutes searching RIGHT where it was supposed to be. I beat the boss, and Curly died.

Did you get the first booster pack? You're supposed to wait for the better one. So, basically, good things come to those who wait

I'm so excited that this is coming to the DSi!! Will it be the same as the one on WiiWare, or will it be tweeked?

And I have to say, this is the second best thing to happen to the DSi. Flipnote was the first.

If they're smart, then Nicalis (and Nintendo) won't price it over 800. Not that Cave Story isn't worth much more, but I've paid $12 for it already and I can also play it for free online and a little extra incentive to grab it again is always welcome.

Sincerely,

@Funky It will have at least one exclusive feature (and the original developer's blessing, which apparently the WiiWare version didn't have, lol). And haha yeah I forgot about Flipnote (and probably Shantae) when I wrote this, but still.

Where did you read that it will have an exclusive feature?

Also the WiiWare version did have Pixel's blessing from the start - this was very clearly stated by Pixel in the Nintendo Channel interviews. After the port was done, he played through it and said he loved it. Nicalis had to approach him in person to request the rights to port the game to WiiWare. If they had done it without his permission, he would have had every right to sue them for every dollar they're worth. Nintendo also definitely would not have allowed a game which infringes intellectual property laws to be published on WiiWare.

We don't know that yet. There could be more secret endings or extras that we don't know about. For Goodness sake, the game was just confirmed a day ago! No need to jump to conclusions yet

No. The game is quite old now and any significant changes would have been made for the WiiWare version, not the DSiWare version. The WiiWare version was quite a large undertaking by Nicalis, considering the translation, redone graphics and remixed music. WiiWare also has a bigger and more prominent market so it would make far more sense to make changes for that version.

Knowing Pixel and his perfectionist streak, he wouldn't be happy about any unapproved changes either. The Nintendo Week interviews with Nicalis also showed they had great respect for the original material so I don't think they'd risk defaming it by making any changes to it either. New endings or stories are pretty much out of the question. NL's article mentions that Pixel played through the DSiWare version already so that means it's basically complete already.

I expect the DSiWare game to essentially be a port of the WiiWare version, considering how short the development time was. It is also probably without the WiiWare version's graphical updates due to the DSi's smaller screen.

It would be jumping to conclusions to say that there will be anything significantly new about the DSiWare version.

@Popyman Twice. First on the NES back in the day, second was the GB Deluxe version (which I think was actually a birthday present anyway). The Deluxe version had save files which is something I had wanted since I played the original (my cousin finished the game by leaving his NES on for like a month), not to mention a whole host of extras. So that was definitely a worthy purchase.

Of course Cave Story is a good game and Pixel deserves respect for it. I played it on PC and finished it on WiiWare, so don't think I'm not a fan. It's really your choice whether you want to buy it more than once. I just don't think the DSiWare version is enough to warrant paying for it again, classic or not. Unless the portable aspect of it is a big factor for you, in which case I'd understand.

And then everyone stopped posting.

Also that was kind of a joke because Nicalis decided to list Pixel's blessing as a 'feature' for the DSiWare version, but not the WiiWare one. Of course Pixel liked it if he let them port it, and I know that plagiarism isn't allowed on any Nintendo sanctioned service, I've seen the Nintendo Channel Dev Diary too.

Oh lol k. I missed the joke. /whoosh

Needless to say, Cave Story will definitely be one of the best games on DSiWare. The service need more quality games like it! Good thing Shantae will be out soon too.

Oh yeah, sounds great. Hopefully I'll have enough points for it after I download Shantae. Pecking Order!

Huzzah/Oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 (whichever you prefer) Cave Story WiiWare was updated so I think we're clear for the DSiWare version very very soon now!
BTW according to Nintendo Power it has a music player, which is awesome because the remixed music is better than memory-restoring mushrooms, if you know what I mean.

I'm gonna wait for the 3DS to get this. Just on the off chance that it won't be transferable, and the WiiWare version will last me a while anyway.
