Ok, for those of you who have played Animal Crossing, this is like "Animal Crossing: Mob Eddition". For those of you who haven't played Animal Crossing, I'll break it down for you. You start off as this guy who owes some big time mobster a million dollars (totally original). You have to pay back this man 50,000 dollars each week (I already have about 11,000 in about 30 minutes). Since this is a real time game, it will take you a while, but you only have to pay a little bit each day. In order to pay this head honcho you must do a variety of missions to earn some cash. These include things like, jacking cars and selling them (you can do this at any time), maybe killing some gangsters, protecting someone, and so on. Just typical gangster stuff. The city is fairly large, and has very nice visuals. Car controls are very frustrating at first, but after about 30 minutes of play, they're easy to handle. The game is kinda wierd in the fact that you can walk straight through a light pole but you can't get through a bush. The city is very complex, and although you have a gps, it doesn't give you turn by turn directions, so there will be plenty of times when you find yourself somewhat lost. Shooting people can be fun, but its mostly one shot and they're dead(this may differ as you progress later in the game). Also, you can ride tanks and helicopters later in the game but I haven't gotten that far. There are four songs that play once you get in a car, but usually you won't even ride in a car long enough to hear one full song. There are 5 weapons: shotgun, machine gun, grenade, flame thrower, and rocket launcher. You can hold all five at once. Powerups include: health, ammunition, disguise, and posse(have two gangsters provide instant backup). 50 hidden packages also lay around the town for you to collect (I have no idea what happens once you collect them all). You can also earn achievements, 30 total (10 achievements, three different classes: Punk, Thug, Pro). Questions anyone?

After an hour of playing, I think it's pretty cool. I had to laugh when I died during one of the gta rampage style side missions, the text came up saying something like "Mission failed. You're worthless.". That's pretty harsh XD.

That sounds like a pretty neat idea for a game.

Yeah, I played it some more. I actually got more into it as i played. Also, the helicopter is fun, but I haven't actually needed it yet. Definately something to come back to since you can easily jump into a small mission in 5 minutes

Played some more after dark. The headlights and streetlights set the proper mood, but I can't really see any impact besides visuals. I'm out of things to do ATM, besides stealing cars, so I guess I'll probably be given more missions at 1:00.
It's a shame they didn't allow custom soundtracks in this game. Also, I bought the tank and it looks a little glitched, like the turret layer is below when it should be on top. Maybe it's the way it's supposed to be, but it looks pretty strange to me.

To those few who made the leap...

1. How do the graphics compare to other dsiware games.(dsi web browser over here)
2. How big is the city?
3. Does the city seem just to be recycled parts when driving around ?

thanxs in advance...

I think this game is very good for a dsiware game. I like flying in the helicopter. COOL!!!

@cheapo- First off, the graphics are very good compared to most dsiware games, its a 3d world and everything else is 2d for the most part, although some of the graphics are unbalanced. For example, you might see an extremely well detailed building next to a very little detailed light pole

Second, The city is fairly large. There is one major road that goes all the way around the city, and that take about five minutes to go around. Here is a pic

and the picture above also addresses your last question, the city doesn't seem to be recycled for the most part. There are probablylike 3 types of each generic thing though (trees, bushes, some buildings). So there is variety, and if any parts are recycled, you won't really notice.

Well, with a couple of days of gameplay under my belt, I can offer a bit of insight into how the real time clock functions day to day. You basically have your daily jobs (like delivering pizza, driving a taxi/ambulance ect) which you can do at your leisure once a day. There are also more high paying, random missions that come in as you're playing which usually require immediate action if you want to take it on (I seem to get about 5 of these a day). Once you've completed your daily jobs, there isn't much productive stuff to do but steal and sell cars and look for packages. Then, at 1:00pm your daily tasks are again selectable, and more random missions begin.
At this point, I'd have to say it feels more like Tamagotchi than Animal Crossing.

@MoFaJo - Hi, I'm the developer who ported the game for Tag. I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to write up your thoughts on the game. A lot of work went into the game, and it's great to see people are enjoying it!

@StrikeTeamGames- and thank you for taking your time to make a rather enjoyable game, and good luck on any future games you make as well. It is always nice to have developers come to nintendolife.

Hey Paul here from the developer Tag Games. Great to see that all you DSi players are having fun with our game. This is the first time we have released a game for DSiWare so its very much a learning process. We have a couple of good reviews in the bag so that's great and makes a lot of the work really worthwhile.

We've been accused of ripping off GTA which is kind of funny because a few of us worked on the original GTA games at DMA Design. I in fact designed the first Liberty City so in a way we do have some close ties with those games! You might not also know that Car Jack Streets started life as a 350k mobile phone download. When we set up Tag we really wanted to try and get a GTA style game onto a phone - a major technical feat!! If you have a cell/mobile phone you might want to try and track the game down and compare with the DSi version!!! The game kind of grew from there and for iPhone we took it full 3D and added lots of new features. After being a huge success on iPhone it was a natural step to bring CJS to DSi and soon PSP.

IMHO the DSi version is the best yet. The d-pad makes control much easier and the screen resolution suits the retro feel! Anyway if you like the game spread the word to your friends so we make lots of money and can afford to make a sequel!!! Feel free to send your thoughts for improvements to us at carjackstre... you never know we might get some into the next game I'll keep an eye on this thread and the one in the forum so if you have any questions about the game please ask. You might also like to follow us on Twitter (www.twitter.com/taggames) for latest news about the game.

Thanks and enjoy the game!!
Paul

Paul, any plans to bring this one to Japan (import DSi owner here)? I did greatly enjoy the original GTA (the later, more "realistic" ones I'm not quite as keen on).

@paultag I know a guy who was in DMA Design. It's a shame what happened to them in the end. You're based in Dundee, right? Anyway, letting sleeping dogs lie... I'll just say GTA2 is my favourite of the series. Love the top-down camera, retro look and controls much better than the new ones.

Since you managed to get CJS in full 3D on the iPhone, was that not possible on the DSi? Is the DSi's hardware simply incapable of those graphics? Still glad to hear the DSi is the best one though.

I'm going to buy Car Jack Streets once a few more games I want on DSiWare come out, so I can justify getting points in bulk. Right now I'm just 200 points shy.

Here's hoping for a sequel!
